My goal for 2018 is to use these drills to improve my accuracy and take more training to improve my overall self defense abilities.
Tried "The Test" from the list at KR Training that oljames linked to. Challenging. 10 yards, 10 shots, in 10 seconds w/ a score of 90 or better.

I could do it in the 13 ~ 14 second range. I'm going to work on getting it down into the 11 ~ 12 second range and then down into the 10s.

Re: What are your 2018 shooting goals?

Six months in, six months to go - how are you doing on your 2018 shooting goals?

I've shot the Dot Torture drill clean.

The 5x5 (5 yrds, 5 shots in 5 seconds 5 times) drill I can shoot clean right at 5 seconds per string, but I'm working on knocking some time off that.

Bottom one is where I started pushing it. Close but no cigar.

Haven't taken any pistol classes this year but have my eye on a couple in the fall. Did participate in a pistol instructor's practice last week that was a good challenge. Also thinking about taking a sporting clays class with OSP (the Ash's) at American Shooting Center.

All in all, I'm at a really happy place with my shooting...which means I really need to step up my goals.

Re: What are your 2018 shooting goals?

Goal update.

My weekly therapy session at the range has been showing results. Finally ran the dot torture target clean at 3 yards a couple of times. I've since moved it out to 5 yards with optimistic visions of going to 7. Support hand, that pesky #8 circle, remains a challenge.

After running through it at 5 yards. I've been moving a fresh target out to 7 and just shooting bulls eyes in each circle, working my way down and back 1 shot at a time. Then trying a 3rd pass at speed. Overall, I'm pleased with my results and it's proven to be a really good challenge.

I'm throwing some other exercises in to keep things fresh.

Re: What are your 2018 shooting goals?

Shot the dot torture target at the range yesterday morning before the ice'pocalpyse hit. Had one shot out of bounds, and it was on the easy two and two section. Had a great strong hand/support hand sequence to boot. I have may have said some unkind things blaming everything but the idiot holding the gun. :biggrinjester:

I'll get it next time.

Some great drills there. "The Test" looks challenging. Going to have to try that one for sure.

That one's fun isn't it? Nice shooting.

Fitness is one I need to work on as well.

Make top half of C level in USPSA.
I've only shot in a monthly, non-affiliated match the last few years. Unfortunately, that club shut down at the end of 2017. I'm going to have start shooting w/ one of the local IDPA/USPSA groups around here. Have no idea where I'll stack up so that might be a good challenge to tackle.

Welcome. The northern contingent is pretty active here and I'm sure somebody will say howdy shortly.

Reloading - I'm tempted. Maybe I'll add that to my 2018 'things to learn' list.

I haven't really thought about this but I suppose I'd like to shoot a match of some kind and start going to the range with a purpose.

I'll need to think on this more.
Monty, not to pimp my other thread, but you want to shoot more take on the Winchester/NRA marksmanship challenge at PSC. I think you'd really enjoy it. A great deal of it could be done on your own.

What are your 2018 shooting goals?

What are your shooting/training goals for 2018? I had a pretty good 2017 and punched some big ones off my list (a challenge I'm going to post in a separate thread). I really want to push myself this year. How about you?

One thing I'm working on this year is pistol accuracy. I'm also in search of another good local'ish training class to take. Might make it to Gunsite this year if the schedule works. Not holding my breath, but hope the state sends me an invite to school safety certification this year. Finally somewhat related, have to renew my first aid/cpr/aed cert this spring, get into a stop the bleed class, and find some better trauma training.

-----

Here's one drill I found on the web and have decided to master at 7 yards.

Dot Torture
Printable target: https://pistol-training.com/wp-content/ ... target.pdf

Tried it at 3 and 7 yards. Here's a 3 yard target with 4.5 out of 50 out. Support hand is a challenge the other 2 misses were simple inattention.

Image

"Start at 3 yards. You have to get all 50 hits to pass. Once you can shoot the whole drill without a single miss, either increase the distance or add time pressure. For instance, try to finish the entire drill in under 5 minutes while maintaining 100% accuracy."

Dot 1 – Draw and fire one string of 5 rounds for best group. One hole if possible, total 5 rounds.[/*]
Dot 2 – Draw and fire 1 shot, holster and repeat X4, total 5 rounds.
Dots 3 & 4 – Draw and fire 1 shot on #3, then 1 shot on #4, holster and repeat X3, total 8 rounds.
Dot 5 – Draw and fire string of 5 rounds, strong hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dots 6 & 7 – Draw and fire 2 shots on #6, then 2 on #7, holster, repeat X4, total 16 rounds.
Dot 8 – From ready or retention, fire five shots, weak hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dots 9 & 10 – Draw and fire 1 shot on #9, speed reload, fire 1 shot on #10, holster and repeat X3, total 6 rounds.

In lieu of drawing from a holster (range constraint), I'm picking the pistol up from the rest.

How are you challenging yourself? Got any great ideas? I'm looking to steal from the best. :thumbs2:
