Re: HB-47 Maximum of 4 Hours?

I'm a little surprised that so many instructors are in favor of the 4 hour class. I honestly don't see how it's possible to cover the DPS material effectively in 4 hours. I put on a solid 10 hour; no filler. All of the better instructors I work with feel much the same way. We put a lot into our clas...

Re: Expenses?

There has been talk for many years about DPS using people's DL photo on the CHL. If Mr. Murphy has anything to do with it, that might finally get implemented the week right after you purchase new equipment. ;-) Kind of like the instructors who got their notary public commission and now DPS has stud...

Re: new chl 100

Did DPS notify us that these forms are to be used as on an effective date? I'm not comfortable with this grapevine method of disseminating important information.

Re: Electronic Copy of Completed Chl-100's

I use human duplication as my backup backup plan. If my scanner fails, I use the range's copier. If that fails as well, I always have extra forms to go the manual route. For me, it saves time and is less work for me to have the students create the duplicate. Unless I or the range have a copier with...

Re: Electronic Copy of Completed Chl-100's

simple and low-tech is sometimes better. Please turn in your geek card. :smash: I can't tell you how many times some bozo changed the wireless key at the range without telling anyone, the printer/scanner died, or the Windows Update that installed automatically the night before screwed up display or...

Re: New CHL100 on state site

I'm eager to see some communication from DPS. Throwing a form up on the website with no explanation, no effective date, etc., is not adequate. I agree, a little pro-active communication would have warded off a whole lot of bad press. But, if you send them an email at CHLInstructors@dps.texas.gov, I...

Re: Electronic Copy of Completed Chl-100's

I'm an IT geek, too, but scanning takes time. My storage space is cheaper than my time. I use preprinted CHL-100s where they only fill in a couple of blanks. They get two pages; one is watermarked "Instructor's Copy." I keep one and give the other back. My forms are kept in file boxes in a...

Re: New CHL100 on state site

So, we're supposed to define "allocated" as "spent"? DPS needs to get their stuff together; say what they mean, mean what they say. Again, words mean things.

Re: New CHL100 on state site

By the way, someone mentioned that the CHL-100 is not password protected. This seems like a tremendous oversight inviting fraud. I wonder how many instructors are going to get nailed because DPS published this form and some unscrupulous "student" decides to forge the instructor information...

Re: New CHL100 on state site

As far as I know, there are no requirements to "spend a certain amount of time on each topic" -- other than the overall 10-15 hours. The "loophole" i referred to was your use of the term "allocation". Perhaps you just don't like the use of the word (loophole)? I just p...

Re: New CHL100 on state site

Hmm, "allocated" is an interesting loophole. Note, however, the instructions state, "The amount of time TAUGHT for each of the four (4) required topics. Add additional topics covered and the amount of TIME SPENT on each additional topic." (Emphasis mine.) I understand that we ha...

Re: New CHL100 on state site

I think the keyword here is "allocated." My lesson plan allocates a certain amount of time for each module, including breaks. I also cover useful material outside the DPS lesson plan as part of my class time. In addition, there is a great deal of overlap, so topics are discussed multiple t...
