Re: 1984

I just read 1984 this week. I went to an ACE Christian school and this book was definitely not on our approved reading list when I was in high school.

First, I thought Orwell was a really good writer. The plot and story telling were top notch compared to the current fare on Kindle.

The most striking things from the book with regards to current affairs were the manipulation of the language so that dissenting views were unthinkable and inexpressable. The way the media trys to eliminate words like illegal alien or Islamic terrorist is exactly as described in the book.

While we are not yet completely rewriting the past, the present will be easily modified since most of it is digital. There's no visible effort to rewrite paper books and I hope we keep it that way. But in 2040, Minitruth could easily rewrite the events of 2015 online and the few paper traces would be ignored and insignificant.

Oddly enough, the suppression of free thought, sexuality, individualism seems to be done by both the right and left in the US somewhat equally.
