Home Invasion - 3 Years Later

You may recall that in 2007 there was a home invasion in Connecticut where the father managed to escape, but the bodies of his wife and two daughters were found in their burned home.

The one of the two men charged with the deed is on trial. The husband testified today. Story at link.

Some points from the article, in case the link goes dead. I can't quite call them "highlights."

- The invaders targeted the home because one of them saw the mom and daughters in the parking lot of a "Stop and Shop" the previous day (the invasion happened at 0300), and followed them home.

- The husband had fallen asleep on the couch and woke up to find he had already been beaten and had blood running down his face. He was tied to a post in the basement.

- One of the invaders drove the wife to the bank and had her withdraw $15K.

- One of the tellers testified that the mom mentioned she was withdrawing the money because she and her family were being held hostage. She left and the invader drove her home, where 30 minutes later he raped and strangled her. I do not know why the police were not able to intervene within 30 minutes.

-The daughters were tied to their beds. Gasoline was used to start the fire. The daughters died of smoke inhalation, which means they were not killed prior to starting the fire. The invaders left them and their dad to burn.

-Dad heard thumping and spraying sounds upstairs. He called out. One of the invaders yelled, "Don't worry, it's all going to be over in a couple minutes." Dad managed to get free of the pole (but was still tied up), hopped up some back stairs, and out of the house to a neighbor. The neighbor did not recognize him because of the beating and blood.

Another account of the trial notes that the invader on trial has already said he wants to plead guilty, but his court-appointed attorneys are taking this to trial to try to get life without parole instead of a death sentence. The prosecutor refused to plea bargain for the life sentence.

Ah. About the cops: They were still setting up a perimeter. When the two invaders left the house, they crashed into a police car.

All the guns in the world wouldn't have saved them when he let them get that close with no warning. Dogs, alarm system, locked doors, etc....
