DETROIT (Talk Radio 1270) Has it come to this? Yes it has, according to Joan McKenna, whose son Tim McKenna, 19, was shot while delivering pizza in Detroit.

In the wake of the shooting, a Jets Pizza franchise in Dearborn ruled it will no longer deliver to Detroit after dark. Before the shooting, they sent two drivers to every nighttime Detroit delivery, one of whom was armed, Joan McKenna said.
Which brings us back to Texas, Grand Prairie: http://www.myfoxdfw.com/story/19294984/ ... rer-police" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -
Two 17-year-old boys are charged with luring a pizza delivery worker to a vacant house, then brutally beating and assaulting her.
Its a dangerous time to be a delivery driver.

"Before the shooting, they sent two drivers to every nighttime Detroit delivery, one of whom was armed, Joan McKenna said."

There is just NOT enough money to be made delivering pizzas to justify that kind of expense, and risk. SMH

Seriously! My father in law used to run a Mr. Jim's Pizza, he said the costs (especially the delivery) are what drove him out of the business. Right now with Papa John's I not only have to tip my driver but the place charges me a $2.99 delivery surcharge as well. Adding $6-7 to the whole price, practically another pizza!

They must have charged extra to do those deliveries.

Personally, I don't think you could pay me enough to do ANYTHING in Detroit after dark.

Maybe the daytime too.

It's not like the thugs doing this are going to turn away from crime....they'll just start robbing the drivers in the daytime.

Detroit: It's not Hell, but you can see it from there.

Inside joke: There is a town in Michigan called Hell, and not far from Detroit.

Edited: Board's auto-correct won't let the actual town's name display, but is it spelled H E double-hockey-stick. Honest.

So that's where they got the idea for the "30 minutes or less" movie.
There really are some twisted folks out there.
And no you couldn't pay me enough to go to Detroit. There're many parts of Dallas I won't visit after dark.

Walking down the main street of Kabul wrapped in an American flag would probably be safer than walking in most of Detroit. I had to attend meetings in the GM mega-center and was scared just to drive into the hotel to park.

If ever there was a tribute to the fallacy of the Model City program, it is Detroit

And today, after all that money was spent......

What it will take to fix it is completely relocating most of the current residents.

I wonder how much being a pizza sniper escort pays?

It appears that dark and pizza are not the only problems in Detroit

http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2012/10/06/ ... -visitors/

It was bad enough when I was there for almost a year during 2005.

Meanwhile, it looks like the focus of the leadership in the Department is elsewhere

http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/19750 ... -promotion

Corruption in Detroit remains rampant and it isn't surprising that it includes the PD or that it appears to be swept under the rug.

I have an internet friend who is a retired Detroit cop he lives in Midland, MI and will only go to Detroit if he can't avoid the trip. He always goes armed and with someone who is armed also if at all possible.

This policy isn't that unusual. In the early 90's I worked for a Pizza Hut in Tacoma Washington, and there was a section of our delivery area that we would not deliver to after dark.

The more unusual policy is that of sending armed escorts along on delivery runs. Kind of like the old days with someone "riding shotgun" on the stagecoach. I can't imagine that this would be a profitable practice for any pizza place.
