if she can't manipulate a slide, chances are she won't be able to work most DA triggers found on pocket revolvers. my wife is a young, avid work-out-a-holic and has a hard time with her S&W .38 DA pull.

could you possibly take her to a local store/range and let her test her strength on the DA revolvers, then maybe the SA on those with exposed hammers?

I totally agree. My wife can't rack the slide on most pistols....and can barely pull the trigger on my Smith 642. She can do both on the Ruger SR22P I bought her.

My wife had a similar problem racking a G19 so she ended up with a S&W 431pd , 32H&R 6 shot.Very light and accurate.J frame, carries it in a Blackhawk OWB leather holster. They do come on the market now and again.

Good info guys... I'm thinking about picking up a revolver for myself, but I'd also like my mom to try one out as she has issues racking the slide on anything bigger than a .22. No problem with her shooting a DA auto though so I think she can handle it.

Due to some unexpected "life happens" events, the weekend sales were a no-go. So back to the pre-loved market. Just a wild shot in the dark here, but I have about 200 foot of brand new shiny 3/0 welding lead collecting dust. That I would be happy to do a little trading with.
She's not in too much of a hurry, but I would feel better knowing she had what she needed.

Well, I lucked out today and ended up with TWO j frames... A bodyguard and a 637 airweight. Took both out to her and after about 20 rounds each she decided on the bodyguard. I think it was the laser that finally did it. She is keeping her her little 380 in in hopes that with enough pt she will be able to handle it again and is just "borrowing" the 38 until then.

So now I have the little airweight in my stable - does anyone by chance have any decent wooden boot grips laying around? This one has what looks like Taurus ribber grips, soft to shoot but grab on everything worse than a 3 year old at toys r us. I could see me toting this little guy during coverall weather when my 1911 is buried.

I believe that S&W made some .32 j-frames.
Gives you one additional cartridge, and a bit less recoil than a .38 Spl.

Took the little airweight to the range today, give it a thorough work out. It was not overly unpleasant with the corbon +p fodder, and the dewc puff loads were actually fun. With a solid rest it was not hard to put 5 in a snuff can, the only real problem was poi was about 16 inches over poa at 15 yards.
Still looking for nice wood stocks for it. I found and old set of uncle mikes boots in a drawer and tossed the knock off ribbers. All in all it worked out nicely, the subject of the original post joined us and ran a handful of cast boolits through her new bodyguard, then made us feel pretty bad when she broke out her K frame 22 with the itty bitty sights and started playing connect the dots on our targets.
Now she's threatening to teach my daughter's how to shoot, lord have mercy.

Never underestimate an eighty year old country girl

My wife has the 642 airweight (no hammer). I think you'll like it. There is a bit of snap with +P loads, but it's not much more than what you get with a 9 mm semi auto. I have a Ruger LCR357 and I find the triggers similar, but the Ruger one seems a bit smoother and breaks cleaner. Both shoot well and are pretty much dead on at 10 yards. The one thing I don't like about the wife's S&W is that the sight is not easily replaceable, which is one of the reasons I got the Ruger. FWIW, I'm also finding that the Hornady FTX style rounds shoot great (both 38spl+P and 357 mag), but all the heavier bullets do not do so well in the snubbies. For example, I use 125gr rather than the 158gr. Don't know why, they just shoot better and obviously have less recoil. Good luck!
Cheers!

Mark

Bought my wife the Bodyguard 380 auto and it took her 2 fingers to sqeeze the trigger. Had her try many guns for a nice trigger pull and low and behold the Tuarus 709 slim in 9mm hit the spot. She loves it

For anyone reading this thread who is also in the market for a .38/.357 wheelgun,
check out the thread for "Academy. December 16-22, 2012..." which I started.

You can get a .357 Magnum Rossi, 6 rounds, for $279.99. It's not a Smith or a Ruger, but it's inexpensive enough
to buy for a car/truck gun. I have the same revolver living in my seatbelt holster for a car BUG.

YMMV.

Both onbody at all times: Springer XDS & Ruger SR9C.
Seatbelt holster: Rossi .357, loaded with six .38's. NRA & TSRA.

I thank God every day that I wake up American.
