Replacing him with Simpson was a long shot at best. Dem Lawmakers were needed and, at the last minute, Strauss cut a deal with them to vote for him. I suspect that they have their eyes on the Texas revenue increases and Strauss will try to help them spend those.

There are rumblings that Strauss also had to make a deal with the Conservatives. It will remain to be seen if the gun legislation was part of that deal.

Hopefully Charles will weigh in on this thread and let us know what really happened.

Voting for speaker of the house should be done by secret ballot.

There is no reason that our elected officials should have to play this game, living in fear that if they speak against the speaker that their bills will not get heard and that they will not be assigned to favorable committees.

There's a radical thought.

Thats a key reason Americans have privacy when voting. To prevent reprisals for voting our beliefs.

The flip side of the coin is why there's no secret ballots in many dictatorships and third world countries.

Michael Quinn Sullivan was hired by a multi-millionaire in Midland in conjunction with Craddick to spread false rumors about Strauss. Craddick is a vindictive fella.

Strauss will allow bills to originate from the bottom up as opposed to how Craddick ruled with an iron fist.

Don't let the smear campaign fool you, Campus Carry will come up again and has a VERY good chance of passing.

TSRA was more concerned last session with getting the employer bill passed, they felt this was more important than campus carry...Campus Carry is on their radar and very important to them this session.

Strauss is not as bad as everyone thinks. While he is not as conservative as we would like, he won't force his beliefs on our legislators. He truly believes in a representative style of government.

We'll have to agree to disagree on Strauss. I fully understand that politics are a dirty business but I'd ask you do keep an open mind and go back through the last legislative session. Look at the bills that were initiated by Conservatives and see how many of them ever saw the light of day on the Legislative calendar. How you prevent measures that you don't want passed from being passed is to make sure that the votes never occur. For the Conservative quantity in the last session the Conservative output was awful and it wasn't because they all voted the wrong way when they had the chance.

Sorry but that is not what representative government is about. Campus Carry was just one of the victims.

The opposite of what you said; TSRA didn't rate employer parking lots as a higher priority than campus-carry. I won't comment on the Speaker, it's been decided and we have legislation to pass. If our legislation is bottled up, I'll have no hesitation to tell the truth of what happened after the session is over. Performance as well as elections have consequences.
