Campus Carry - Anyone Heard About A Compromise?

#1

Post by JJVP »

It now looks likely that gun rights advocates can get a bill that removes criminal penalties for anyone who carries a concealed handgun into a college building. Under current law, depending on the circumstances, permit-holders can be charged with misdemeanor offenses if they get caught with their piece in a classroom or in the dean’s office.

The compromise would not be perfect in the eyes of gun rights advocates. It would still allow universities to promulgate student conduct codes that penalize violators with suspensions or expulsions for carrying on campus. But that’s marginally better, at least in the eyes of gun rights advocates, than stamping a “criminal” label on a law-abiding student or professor with a CHL permit just because he or she gets caught with a gun in his pocket or in her purse.
