North America has always been a melting pot, but until relatively recently people came her to be assimilated, not to be different. Vast oversimplification to be sure.

:iagree: , "....when in Rome, do as the Romans do".

That said, I strongly suggest that the GOP get out of its 1950's Ozzie and Harriet mindset and recognize that times have changed and diversity, whatever that means, is upon us.

Hold on there B. Why are all these people here in the first place? Did they come here to be ruled and controlled by another government or did they come here to be free and for the opportunity to succeed and create a better life for their children?

There are freedom loving capitalists in every ethnic group, both genders, and most religions. The same is true for big government socialists, unfortunately.
I sincerely apologize to anybody I offended by suggesting the Second Amendment also applies to The People who don't work for the government.

I think it's excellent that your kids school is putting on an event like that! I'm a big fan of travelling, of seeing other people's culture, and as a history major who has spent a lot of time reading about culture disappearing in textbooks-- i'm also a big fan of keeping your roots close, no matter where you come from.

For example, i'm from a small town in West Texas. When i'm out in the schools I hear racism all the time against asians, mexicans, blacks, arabs, etc. Very few of the kids in my school have ever seen a different culture, much less experienced it. It's just a shame that kids--and adults-- fear what they do not know.

I'd be awfully disappointed if my children do not keep their mother's language....

I'm not sure I'm following you here. Are you agreeing with me or am I missing your point?

Some of the countries represented there are very oppressive, right? Did they or their ancestors come here to create another oppressive country in the mold of their homeland? Some people keep talking about the U.S. being out of touch with the rest of the world and we need to be more like them, but that's not what this country is all about or why it was founded. We don't want to be like the rest of the world.

At no point in time can I recall in the history of the US do I recall immigrants shedding all cultural identity just to come here, except perhaps out of fear of persecution as they experienced in the old country.

At a time where so many have such limited historical memories, and have forgotten their roots, I think it is refreshing to see people so proud of their heritage and want to share it with others and educate them about it. You always will have the bad apples and the folks who give their culture a bad name, but every group has those.
