I'm no expert but I believe one must wait only five years if it is a Class A or B misdemeanor.
The laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.

If he was 17, he wasn't a minor. But, either way, a Class A is a disqualifier for 5 years from the date of conviction.
