home made holster

#1

Post by arkansas_matt »

I'm new to CC and don't know much about holsters. I've spent the last 2 months or so researching them. I do leather work and had a bit of thick leather scrap, so I went and got a sheet of kydex (first time using it) and made my own IWB hybrid holster. I hand formed the kydex, no book press or vacuform... I'm really happy with how it came out. sits pretty deep and with my shirt over it, it doesn't seem to print. Feels kinda strange but I'm going to say that's because I've never worn one before. It's really comfortable besides the "foreign" feeling. My .38 has a nice solid click when it drops in and out so I feel that its secure enough for EDC. I'm about 6'1 @ 170 lbs and wear fitting jeans if that gives you an idea of how it sits.

moderators: I didn't know where to put this, couldn't find a holster thread, I suck at this forum thing.

It does look like it came out nicely. The "hybrid" leather/kydex holsters are by far the most comfortable I've ever worn.

With silver belt clips, you won't be able to use it as a tuckable. But otherwise a pretty good first attempt.

Too flashy? Easy enough to remove and replace, they were just what I had on hand.. I'm gonna replace the rivits with something a bit sturdier.

Yes. They would stand out. Most makers use black for use with a black belt. Much less noticeable.

I used black on my wife's leather iwb I made then realized I only had one black left and 2 chrome. Was on a roll so I went with it. My chl hasn't arrived yet so its only being worn around the house after work till I goto bed. I have a few weeks to switch them out. Thanks for the input, its always appreciated!

Looks great. How did you form the kydex?

Its very nice. I have tried making a few of my own out of just kydex but i could never get it to match as well as a more 'commercial' holster. I think going with a more hybrid method is a pretty smart idea.

I generally make all my accessories out of kydex on my own though, things like magazine holsters. I added a picture of one I made last year.

Oh and all you really need is a heat gun. I went all out when i started and bought a press former and all that fancy stuff. It was a waste. All you need is a heat gun and some gloves.
