Dear Mojo84,
My first week as Lt. Governor has been a busy one. It started with last Tuesday's Inauguration ceremony, where I took the oath of office and delivered a speech outlining my Texas vision. You can watch the entire speech below:
Click to watch
Ever since then, my team and I have been working hard to ensure that my campaign promises are met. The first order of business was changing the 21 vote rule (AKA the Blocker Bill), from needing 21 votes to 19 in order to bring bills to the Senate floor. The Senate voted to change the rule on my first day in office.
Breaking: Texas Senate Adjusts 2/3rds Rule
I said throughout the campaign that we would give the majority more say in Committee Chairmen appointments and member assignments, a change from past practices. On Friday, my 4th day in office, we announced Chair and committee member assignments, reducing Democrat Chairs from 6 to 2. We also reduced the number of standing committees from 18 to 14 in order to save taxpayer money and make the Senate more efficient.
Graphic: Campaign promises met
I look forward to working with all members of the Senate on every issue. These changes give the majority the opportunity to follow through on the strong mandate you gave us in the recent election.
Thank you for your support,
Dan Patrick Signature

Received this email just now from Lt. Gov. Patrick. Straus needs to make similar adjustments. If not, it will show where his allegiance are.

Sounds like he's trying to steer the Senate in the right direction. Let's hope the House follows suit.

Let's wait and see how gun bills do in the Senate before we heap too much praise. Talk is very cheap.

Charles, I haven't "praised" anyone yet. Just sharing what he says he's done so far.Let's wait and see how gun bills do in the Senate before we heap too much praise. Talk is very cheap.
Chas.
Apparently, he's done more than just talk. He lowered the number of votes needed to get a bill to a vote, which you seemed to agree with and was quick to educate me it was a good thing, and he reduced the number of democrat committee chairmen. I would still like to see fewer democrats occupying committee chairs. Don't you?
Granted, you may know more of what is going on behind the scenes and have a well founded reason for your word of caution. Until you or some of the other insiders share with us something contrary to what we are being told, I don't see a problem with being cautiously optimistic.
Otherwise, we can just ignore what's going on and just accept whatever you and the other insiders decide for us.

Chas is right. What they say is only good to remove excess oxygen from the area. What they do is what is important.

I think we all realize this. That's why I haven't heard or seen anyone heaping praise on anyone in the legislature. It's been a long time since any politician has earned much praise.
Do you guys not see this as a step in the right direction? If so, please explain.

Let's see how many gun bills get through the Senate this session. We have the makings of a record year, so if it doesn't happen, well . . .RPBrown wrote:Charles L. Re: Straus needs to follow suit.
Thanks for the links, Charles. I noticed at least the Statesman article was published today.
It seems like Patrick is echoing what many have said on here that it doesn't appear to him that there are that many that want open carry. Seems to me, we should make him aware in a professional congenial way. Shouldn't he and our reps hear our voices?
If there isn't support for our cause in the legislature, aren't we to blame?
By the way, I agree with him on many other issues.

Re: Straus needs to follow suit.
Here is a good refresher on what we are having. Have we done all we can to promote our cause properly?

Not "we" in the broad sense, but a very small identifiable few.mojo84 wrote:If there isn't support for our cause in the legislature, aren't we to blame?
I do too. However, if almost all gun bills don't get through the Senate with the Republican majority, only 19 votes needed to debate/vote a bill, and a Lt. Gov. who professed strong commitment to guns owners and the Second Amendment, then I won't be a happy person.mojo84 wrote:By the way, I agree with him on many other issues.

Re: Straus needs to follow suit.
Correct, "we" as a collective group with an interest in guns and open carry not counting the idiots. Should we take action to make Patrick aware there may be more interest and support than he realizes?Charles L.
