Yes and no. They could have complied with the law all the way. They could have been unarmed in DC and picked up their guns on the way, planning to unload and lock them up in CA. OTOH, they could have violated the law in DC and just didn't get caught....and planned to violate the law in CA and hadn't gotten there yet. I haven't seen any information that they did anything illegal. But even if they broke the law in DC and didn't get caught there is no way it could be proven, and when they used their guns it appears they did so legally.

If they violated the law with the knowledge of the authorities and there were no consequences because of who they are, then yes, but I haven't seen any evidence of that.

Pro-gun people who work in DC usually live across the river in VA, where the gun laws compare favorably to our own.

I can't find the link right now, but one of the stories I read about
this incident said that the couple had ".35 caliber handguns".
It makes you wonder what else reporters get wrong when documenting
their stories.

Dead assailant identified. Wanted on parole violation from TN.

Both former CNN reporters have CHL.

And a name means we can see photos of the assailant.

I just google fu'd this; A .35 Caliber is the same as a 9mm, or S&W actually had a .35 Automatic pistol. Maybe the reporter was anti-European and their Metric ways. I had heard of a .35 auto as well as, I believe a 35/40 rifle, so curiosity got the best of me during my dinner. I never cared what a 9mm compared to in caliber, until today. But it was neat to find this out. From now on, when folks ask about my Glock, I will tell them it is a .35 caliber pistol, even sounds tougher.

Well, thank you for researching the .35 angle. I still think it's pretty odd to refer to a modern handgun that way.

Interestingly, one of the links said that the GG fired all the rounds from the first handgun he had, then continued firing
with the 2nd handgun. Wow. You can never carry too much ammo, or better yet, too many loaded handguns.

Lesson learned from this encounter: Carry extra mags, speedloaders, or a BUG. You never know whey you'll need 'em.

More from Fox with some great comments from the former CNN anchor:
Bottom line: Assailant DOA in the parking lot. My hero recovering from five gunshot wounds. We both are alive.

Now, ask me how I feel about the right to bear arms.

Here's the truth:

1. Criminals will always have guns, this is not about them.

2. Americans have a constitutional right to bear arms. Humans have a right to defend themselves. If we didn't have the Second Amendment, we would create it.

3. You can't control everything; but if it makes you feel better, go with a simple law preventing violent offenders from buying firearms. Make it "violent" offenders rather than "white collar" offenders, or most of Capitol Hill won't be allowed to own them.

4. Get a gun, get legal, be responsible, trust yourself. Don't trust yourself? Then don't carry. But for God's sake then, shut the f**k up about it, because that's where your involvement ends.

Chuck and I were married one year ago, on the Fourth of July. Sure, we celebrated our first wedding anniversary in a hospital. But thanks to the Second Amendment, my crack-shot husband and the pistol he used, we were able to have a first anniversary.

After having cogitated on this for a while, I believe that there are more lessons to be learned from this incident.

Here we have 2 Georgia CHL's, with a pistol each, presumably proficient in using them, but the critical piece that was
missing from their self defense mindset was that neither of them had their pistols ONBODY. Lynne Russell was up and dressed,
so she would have been the one more able to resist the armed robber... but the pistols were apparently in the motel's bedside tables,
or somesuch.

Motels are hotbeds of criminal activity. That's why the LEO's always patrol them, checking number plates. Plus a robber might be
aware enough to realize that if he robs someone with an out of state license plate, they are much less likely to travel a great distance
to testify against him, should he get arrested.

Now her husband was in the shower and would have been unable to have his pistol ONBODY. But he could have had it somewhere in
the bathroom with him.

A similar self defense case happened some years ago in an Atlanta, GA suburb. A single woman (mid 50's year old, IIRC) was in the
shower when a rapist stalker chose to assault her. She had fighting spirit and used the only weapon she had at hand...her shower curtain rod.
After tussling with the intended rapist for a while, she managed to get to her handgun, and killed the attacker with a hail of .22's.

The Lynne Russell story got me to thinking about the gap in my own defensive situation. While I have been in the shower, all my handguns were
in the bedroom. Should a home invader come in while I'm showering I would also have to resort to the shower curtain rod...not optimal.

So what I do now is bring a pistol into the bathroom and set it inside a drawer. That way it's concealed and not as affected by shower steam.

Some years ago on this board, someone posted a picture of a large ziplock bag hanging from the showerhead area. It contained a Glock
and extra mags. Funny.

Although the "attacked in the shower" scenario is unlikely to happen to any of us, would you rather fight someone off with a shower rod...or your handgun?

Respectfully submitted for consideration...SIA

Where I would differ with you is on the gun in the bathroom. I'm not saying you shouldn't have a gun in the bathroom, but whether you do or not, being in the shower leaves you vulnerable. The wife should not have left the room with the husband in the shower whether he had a gun in the bathroom or not. When she did leave the room she should have been armed and/or her husband should have been watching her from the door or escorted her to the car.
