When I was based in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in the winter of 1971, I used to drive by a car dealership on the way to work that advertised that they would take almost anything in on trade for a new car. A lot of the guys at the air base wound up trading in various souveniers, guns, stereos, and whatnot on a new car that would stand up to the Nodak winter (i.e. that meant that it had a block heater installed in it). My NCOIC, a master scrounger if there ever was one, stopped by there one time looking for a used car for his oldest daughter who was coming up on driving age, and wound up buying not only a car, but a used snowmobile for the family, and a beautiful hunting rifle for himself - and the base credit union financed the whole thing!
