Buh-Bye Optics Planet

#1

Post by The Marshal »

Read over at the FNFORUM that someone contacted an employee of Optics Planet that informed him that Company Policy mandates that they no longer sell any magazine over 10 ROUNDS.

Good luck with finding new customers.

Confirmed: If you want to waste your time, you can go there and search for "30 round magazine"

You'll get about 43 results. ALL 10 round versions.
I stopped using them due to their "backordered" after you order it nonsense.

Rules for the internet. Third or fourth party information is rarely, if ever, reliable. ;-)

Posted to their facebook page:

"We are not offering magazines with capacities greater than 10 rounds to the general public due to our location in Northbrook, Illinois, and local laws that limit our ability to sell these. Being an internet retailer serving fifty states can be complex at times, and frankly, our location in Illinois only adds to this complexity. We may not always like the law, but we need to follow it.

We own up to the fact that we did not explain this well internally, which led to an unclear message given to the customer, but we can completely repudiate any notion that this is a reaction to any recent event or the political climate. "

if you dig a bit deeper you'll find that they are located in Cook County where the selling of magazines over 10 rounds is prohibited..
It's not as bad as it sounds..

Possible they were recently reminded they were in violation or possible they have not sold 10+ rounders for some time... I don't know exactly.

Here’s OpticsPlanet’s official statement:

When there’s smoke, there’s often fire. But sometimes – smoke is just smoke.

We fully understand how the email featured in the article on The Truth About Guns suggests that we may have made a decision to limit the sales of magazines over 10 rounds due to the recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida. Before we go any further, we want to make it clear that our condolences go to the families of all of the victims, and that our hearts go out to a community trying to recover after a senseless event.

At OpticsPlanet, we have never used the inflamed tensions and emotions of current events to drive decision making. Our support of the 2nd amendment is made undeniably clear by the products we offer. We are one of the few online retailers who never stopped offering completely legal products such as bump stocks or binary triggers, when many did. We do not raise prices during frenzies. We do, however, follow the laws and make adjustments when legally required.

In this case, insufficient internal communication led to a misread message. We are not offering magazines with capacities greater than 10 rounds to the general public due to our location in Northbrook, Illinois, and local laws that limit our ability to sell these.

Unfortunately, our loyal customer base is best served by purchasing their magazines from retailers in “free” states. This issue is currently out of our hands. We’re committed to working hard to retain your business for everything else you need.

It’s unfortunate that this issue has created so much confusion, and we apologize for not providing clearer messaging in the first place. We continue to support our passionate customer community as we have for the past eighteen years in every way we can.

A better response is to not do business with any company based in Illinois.

Well that explains why I couldn't find a 30 round clip. :headscratch
I had a $40 gift certificate with Optics Planet and was intending to use it for a clip and some other goodies.

It's a shame that the laws of their state have an influence on their business. I wouldn't stop doing business with a company due to circumstances out of their control. Except trying to buy items they can't stock of course.

Now the being informed of a back order AFTER you order is another thing. So far, I haven't experienced this. Everything I've ordered that was "in stock" was indeed in stock.

No, not for me. Optics Planet chose and continues to choose operating in an unfriendly county in an unfriendly state dominated by the corruption of Chicago and the capital in Springfield.
Optics Planet could choose to move out of Cook County or the state, but chooses to comply with restrictions upon their business by corrupt county and state governments.
Same with Rock River Arms and Springfield Armory.
Maybe I'm unduly influenced by the 20 years I spent living in Illinois prior to moving to Texas and seeing the depth of corruption and malfeasance of the government there.

Some folks can't just pick up and leave.
How many employees do they have that would suddenly be unemployed?
Isn't it better to have people employed in an industry you support, even if it means they have some restrictions imposed on them (through no fault of their own) that you don't like?
Wouldn't you rather have folks inside "enemy territory" fighting for change, rather than abandoning the battle completely?

I appreciate your disgust, but I think focusing your ire on compatriots is misguided.

Sure. And Bravo for them.
I packed up and left New England in 1986. Left all my friends and family and made a life for myself in Free America.

If Texas were to turn blue, how many would choose to stay because they have deep roots here? Why would anyone criticize a company that chooses to stay rooted in a difficult location? It's completely counterproductive.

I don't think they're anti-2A muppets like Dick's or CTD, but I don't bother ordering from them any more for the same reason as you.
Add me to that list too. After the second time they pulled that bait-and-switch, I said, "No more!"

Many times companies move with the 'proviso' they'll pay to help employees move with them. They too could do this rather than stating words that add up to: "Hey, it's not our fault we operate in a socialist type (read corrupt) state." They've chosen to stay.

Staying in a state of political corruption only helps the economy of that state.

Until they move, I won't be buying from anymore.

I've bought quite a number of high cost (profit making for them) gun related items from them in the past...no longer.

If they choose to leave for a free state, I'll go back to buying from them.

Some businesses have the courage to leave 'blue states' and in doing so help weaken their socialist type state governments.

Those that choose to stay don't convince me they simply 'have' to conform...baloney. They can leave, at least at this point...

If they moved and even if they moved their employees how many families would still be displaced? How many grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins would no longer be able to see each other regularly? Yes, they could move and they could move the employees but what would it cost? How long would it take to recoup the cost from the profit margin of 30 round magazines? Hating on them for something they didn't choose or advocate isn't very charitable.
It's fine if you disagree. I can't force you to be correct.
