BTW, I've read where people have said that falling with an SOB holster can injure you pretty good. But I have taken a fall onto my back and wasn't harmed in the least. Oh it ached a bit, but no more than falling on your right/left side if you were carrying at 3 or 9 o'clock.

It can severely damage your spine if the pistol is holstered in position across the vertebrae and you fall flat on your back and take the impact on the pistol, sure - doesn't mean to say that it will happen, just that it's easily possible. YMMV.

I think I have enough "padding" back there to break my fall...

In all seriousness, I may try this. Reminds me of Magnum P.I., although I think he carried his grip down, which looks slower than grip up. Right now my 5" 1911 either makes a hole in my jeans if I have the cant too far forward, or prints with the grip if I straighten it up. This should be a cheaper alternative to the 3" 1911 I've been drooling over (fat chance says the CFO )...

I am possessed of surplus "padding" back there myself, but I also have a latticework of titaniam "extra parts" along that part of my spine, not too far below the skin surface. And to this day, nearly 8 years after the surgery, the skin and muscles in my back along the 8" incision line are still a bit tender to the touch. I know for a fact that landing on a pistol if I fell down like that would hurt so bad that I'd not only never do it again, but it might involve a trip to the hospital and the tender ministrations of another neurosurgeon. SOB carry looks real good to me, but that is the reason why I don't try it. It's just not worth the pain and other fallout if I landed on it.

Better plan:

Justify the 3 inch as an accident prevention necessity.

Stand firm.

Don't give an inch.

Get your gun.

I purchased an El Paso Saddlery 'Back Side' from Cheaper than Dirt at a very good price. I stick with a 5:30 position most of the time as otherwise the 1911 tries to shove my kidney into my appendix.
