This is sad--and totally preventable:

Benjamin said he assumed the rifle was unloaded when it was handed it to him
Apparently he learned nothing about assuming things from his time in the USMC.

I have found through a few years of taking training classes that a lot of former/current LEO and military don't necessarily have the best skills or safety habits. Very sad indeed. More than likely he cleared the gun with a magazine inserted and chambered a fresh round and then ejected the magazine. I'm very paranoid about handling "empty" firearms and check multiple times to make sure they are indeed empty. Looking is not enough and I've gotten into a habit of physically sticking my finger in the chamber to check if it is empty after visually checking.

Really? I had no issues with accessing the article. Had a popup ad to subscribe but I was able to close it.

At least two rules were violated here. First, he pointed a rifle at somebody--don't do that.

Second, he dropped the mag but failed to rack the slide/charging handle. There was a live round
in the chamber.

Drop the mag--rack the slide--twice--then visually check the chamber and breech for any rounds.

None of this is difficult. It should be ingrained in anybody handling firearms.
