Just received my CHL. Suggestions needed!

Post by def1ant »

Hey guys I've followed this forum for the the past 2 months or so because I was referred by a friend. And, as expected, there is a wealth of knowledge here and many questions of mine have been answered by simply typing something into the search bar. So I'd like to say thanks to all of you.

Now to the purpose of my thread: I received my CHL yesterday, (it took about a month and a half) and I'm in need of a gun belt, adequate holster, and a "safe" for my honda accord (I'm a college student and we are currently unable to carry on campus.) I currently own a 3rd gen glock 26 and have a cheap holster and regular fossil belt; which as you can expect isn't adequate for daily carry. I've read several suggesting the crossbreed supertuck holster which seems really nice.... However my current dilemma is that I'm only 5' 7" and weigh 135lbs and my clothes are somewhat tight-fitted. Do you guys have any suggestions for me? I'd like something with a good balance of deep conceal-ability and comfort. I understand a good belt is needed as well and a safe for my car when I walk into campus. In all honesty money is not a concern - I emphasize quality/value in everything I purchase. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!! And congrats on receiving your plastic!!

Looks like your build isn't much different than mine. I'm 5'9" tall and weigh about 150. I think the Crossbreed super tuck or the M-TAC holsters would be just what you're looking for. I carry a Sig P226 with a rail in an M-TAC all the time under just a T-shirt. I have a super tuck on order right now for my new weapon. Hopefully it's as comfortable as the M-TAC. I had to give it a try since they don't make an M-TAC for the new CCW I bought.

I like the Comptac Infidel holster - I carry a Beretta 92 concealed using it, and I'm not a big guy (180lbs; 6'1'")

I carry at the 3 o'clock position. I have recommended the holster to a few people and all like it.

Belt
Others have opinions, I made belts and leather products since the 1960s with tools my dad had since the 1940s when he made saddles and boots professionally and taught "Willie Lusk" in Lubbock how to make a complete boot. (Prior to that Willie could only do tops or bottoms, I forget which) Dad made the first boot ever with "cactus stitching" He actually went to the Lubbock library, checked out a book with cactus pictures to do it.

I made my first gun belts.
I quit making gun belts when I found one made better than I can make one.
I get these with the Velcro sewn in.
I've seen lots of belts, but none better.
I own two, only so I can leave one in my Sunday suit and the other in my jeans/cargo shorts. No noticeable wear after wearing a couple years.
I get 1.5" no taper.

I much prefer Comp-Tac to Crossbreed belts for a several reasons, Velcro plus kydex, ... and ...Made in Texas

"my clothes are somewhat tight-fitted" :nono:

Two layers of loose cloth conceal better than one.

A "TALL Tee-shirt is great (JCPENNEYS Big and Tall or Duluth Trading Company "plumbers Butt shirts)
The "wrinkles" in the Tee shirt create "bulges" so no one notices "other" bulges as much in your top shirt.
Get TALL AND a bit LARGER, not tight fitting.

Any loose shirt over that is fine, TALL is better as it allows a bit of "blousing/slack/loose material" on top of your belt if you tuck.
Personally I wear guayabera shirts/Mexican Wedding shirts/Cuban shirts because they have "lower pockets" which when stuffed with things create bulges so no one notices "other" bulges.
Massad Ayoob said "These shirts were worn in Cuba, an armed society"
They have side "vents" for easier drawing

Holsters/Belt Holster Clips

Reason I got Velcro sewn in the belt; On Sundays and deep deep concealment days I don't like holster belt clips on my holster showing on my belt. I use Comp-Tacs V-clips which attach to Velcro UNDER the belt, no indication of a holster clip showing over the belt.

I had an officer staring at me 20 minutes trying to see where my gun was and he never figured it out ... no belt clips showing, that's what he was looking for.

(I'm not saying that a person with V-clips can't be spotted by someone familiar with V-clips, but with a bloused shirt, it certainly isn't easy, and if bloused carefully, I can't tell on others..)

V-clips hold VERY securely, your holster won't "migrate" or slide around out of position. They hold better than standard clips, but you'll get the standard clips too with the holster, they are changeable.

Cheaper holsters' metal clips can scratch belts. I generally hammer those flatter, wear them under the belt, and attach Sticky-back Velcro hooks from WalMart. (Another benefit of getting that belt with the Velcro already sewn in, you can wear some holster clips Under the belt with cheaper holsters like a Kholster after doing that) I mostly wear a Desantis Tuck This 2 with sticky back applied from Walmart, no need to hammer, and more comfortable than most of my hybrid kydex/Leather expensive ones in the drawer.

Glock 26 and XD45 are what I have. I have a Glock 19, but the longer slide "clunks" on chairs when I sit. Tuck This 2 has a spare mag pouch which helps conform to body shape... less gap, you'll see when/if you try one.

For laughs
I wear this hat, no one looks at my belt line

My niece wears this one

I wear a DayGlo Yellow Storm whistle (huge) on my Orange hat, she wears a Dayglo Orange Storm Whistle on her Yellow hat.... not the "WindStorm, it's smaller, but the Storm

Thanks guys for the prompt responses! I'll look into that belt RPB (I definitely want a quality one.) And I also have read the thread about the nanovault which I'm considering. Also, thanks for the holster suggestions - I guess I'm just looking for something that takes up less surface area? The M-TAC and crossbreed varieties appear to be quite large. I'm pretty big on simple things like a nice tuck-able leather holster possibly that has great durability?

Def1ant - Welcome to the forum.

If you want to store a gun vault under you car seat, I suggest you measure the clearance first. I bought a small one for my Honda and it didn't fit.

I now use a Crossbreed Supertuck to carry my PT145. When I first got my CHL, I found a Galco IWB horsehide holster with a "J" clip on it. I soon found it to be as comfortable as shoving a brick in my waistband. When I got my ST, it was much larger and covered more area, but that spreads the weight out further and makes the holster very comfortable. I have no experience with some other holsters that are similarly built as the ST, but would expect those to be comfortable as well.

As for now, I want to get a belt from Crossbreed or someone that has the Velcro sewn on the inside so I don't have the clips showing on top of the belt.

To echo RBP, I just bought 2 new Comp-Tac belts, one black on brown, both have velcro. I just sold my last Comp-Tac belts because I grew out of them over the last year and half (i got smaller :hurry: ).

I carry a M&P 9 full-size in the Comp-tac minatour IWB and I just bought the "Gladiator" OWB and for the past month have been using it exclusively. Long t-shirts, untucked dress shirts are my normal dress and have had no problems concealing.

I am also not affiliated in any way except as a customer.

My Glock 26 goes in a Tuck This 2 with a spare Glock 17 mag having a Pearce PG39 +3 baseplate for a spare 20 rounds, it's nylon, but the similar leather one, SOF-TUCK™ with same system except no mag pouch is below it

Notice the two-screw swiveling mounting clip to sent adjustable cant.
The mag pouch I like as it fills the void in my pants right behind the slide, rounding the belt.
(Links to manufacturer, but ten bucks or so cheaper from regular stores)

Desantis Tuck This 2 for Glock 26

SOF-TUCK™ #106 is a new IWB/Tuck-able holster with adjustable cant. It can be worn strong side, cross draw or on the small of the back. It is built from soft, no-slip suede and reinforced at the top with premium saddle leather to aid in re-holstering. The #106 is available for most concealable hand guns in right and left hand.

The black clip doesn't show up hardly on a black belt, brown belt shown so you can see it

Honestly I bought the Tuck This 2 so I could get it wet fishing/kayaking instead of my expensive leather and it was cheaper, but I wear it all the time and the expensive holsters sit around looking pretty. Little risk, it's cheap, and you can always by another holster is what I thought, but I ended up really wearing it every day.
