problem with gun safe...

My uncle bought me a combination pistol safe for Christmas when the baby was just a few months old. I'm very grateful for the safe; gun storage is a form of baby-proofing in my home, and safes aren't cheap and aren't exactly available at Babies R Us with a coupon.
However, I'm having a bit of trouble with it. It is mounted to the side of my nightstand, and the gun is meant to rest muzzle down in it. The way it is supposed to work is that you are supposed to tap the combination (a strip with four buttons), and the side pops open to reveal the gun's handle. (The gun sits in a type of holster built into the "door" of the safe.)

The problem I'm having is that the door (side) of the safe doesn't pop open when my heavy 1911 is in it. It works fine with any other pistol we have, but not my 1911. Currently, I just have a .38, but I'm not as accurate with it as I am the 1911 (the "Big Girl").

I have tried raising the other end of the night stand. I've played around with it. I don't think it's broken (it's out of warranty anyway); it just doesnt' like the heavier gun.
Is there anything I can do to make this work with my 1911?

I'm assuming it an electronic safe. If it is, have you tried replacing the batteries with a fresh set? If it is not electronic, then never mind.

If it's easy to get to, maybe a stronger spring on the door?

It is electronic; replacing the batteries did nothing.
I have never thought about stronger door springs; that might be the key.

perhaps the 1911 is pressing against the door and jamming the mechanism.

enter your code and press down on the lid to see if the latch releases.

...turn the top of the 1911 against the inside wall...letting it lean on the door is probably holding enough pressure to hold the latch shut...

From your post I gather you are implying that the safe opens properly with lighter guns, but the heavier 1911 prevents it from opening. I am going to assume the hinged bottom is resting on the nightstand, and thus the heavier weight is preventing it from opening.

If this is the case, then I would suggest some of those little stick-on rubber feet from Walmart in the home improvement area. Four of those on the bottom would raise the safe and allow the hinged door to swing open.

Any update on this? We're you able to replace springs?
