Question about the Chip McCormick Power Mag 8 rd.
I have had this mag for a little while now. In July when I was back home for a bit I went to the range. Loaded one round into the mag for the 1911 for the first few shots then loaded 3 rounds in the mag (all FMJ). This is where the problem started. After the first shot I would get a FTF. This was strange as I have not had a single problem with my 1911 since I got it. I tried to put different amounts of ammo in the mag but it never failed on the second to last round it would FTF.
When I got back home I cleaned mag and gun extensively. I looked the mag over and could not see anything wrong with it. So, I put my SD ammo in it and tried to see if I could recreate what was happening at the range (racking the slide by hand; NOT firing it). Sure enough on every second to last round a FTF.
Naturally I took the mag out and do not carry it anymore. Do any of you know what could have caused this? The spring, follower, and lips were all working/feeding fine for the first 6 rounds so what give on the 7th round?
Also, I noticed a lot of you suggesting Wilson Combat mags for Kimber in another thread. Would you suggest those for a Springer too? If so what type of Wilson mag? What brand would you suggest for a 10 rd. mag?

Tripp Research Cobra Mags: http://www.trippresearch.com/store/store_1911.html
Unquestioningly the best 1911 magazines I've ever seen or used. They are all I will buy now. Yes, they cost more; but they are worth the price. What's your life worth?
Also, Tripp Research sells all the parts for their magazines, so you can maintain them on your own if you want. Or, if you just wanted to use their parts to rebuild your own mags, you probably could. Their "hybrid follower" is the heart of the beast.
I have never experienced a magazine related problem with any of my 1911s since I started using Cobra Mags. A few years ago, I bought some Chip McCormick magazines, and they never worked as advertised. It didn't matter if the pistol was a Kimber, a Taurus, or an old 1943 vintage Ithaca. I was not impressed with that product.
EDITED TO ADD: I see that gigag04 beat me to it by one minute!

...years ago I recommended a friend to buy some Shooting Star mags from McCormick for his Para...they did exactly as the OP described..."customer service" first accused him of not putting the mag back together right...when he hadn't taken it apart...then they told him it was bad ammo...they got their mags back, and I don't recommend them anymore...
...Colt, MecGar, Wilson...all good mags...

Thanks guys
I do not mind spending the money on a quality product that may save my life one day at all. I am wanting to get an 8 rd. mag that will be in the gun and then two 10 rd mags as my extras.
I can say that I will never recommend Chip McCormick mags to anyone. I have never heard of a mag doing this on a certain round but I am not impressed at all

I would not let trouble with one magazine cause me to give up a brand altogether. Of course all magazines can go bad or you can get a bad one and some guns just prefer certain brands.
I have used both Wilson and the 8 round power mags and while I know the wilson gets the praise, the power mags in my experience have been every bit as good.
(That said, I generally think a 1911 ought to run with most any decent mag.)

Normally I wouldn't but I have not had the mag for a very long time at all. Plus this is something that I trust my life with on a daily basis. I do not want to be spending any more money on a brand that I have had problems with in the past on the hopes that it was just that one mag that I had. I am no longer comfortable with the Chip McCormick brand.Fisherman74 wrote:I would not let trouble with one magazine cause me to give up a brand altogether. I have three Chip McCormick Power 8 Mags for my box-stock Springfield GI model...I haven't done any "high-volume" competition style shooting, but I have never had a FTF with them. I've put several different brands of ammo through them, including Remington, Federal Champion, even Wolf steel case (a couple of boxes). Could be that your particular pistol just doesn't like that brand of mag. I've herd that before from others about certain pistols being picky about brands of magazine/ammo combinations. You have to find what works for you and your pistol and stick with it.

Maybe but I never had a problem with the mag before. It always fed every single round flawlessly. Then one day it just decided to stop feeding the second to last round, every timeHeartland Patriot wrote:I have three Chip McCormick Power 8 Mags for my box-stock Springfield GI model...I haven't done any "high-volume" competition style shooting, but I have never had a FTF with them. /shrug
CMC power mag 8 rounders have been pretty much bullet proof in my guns, and in my fellow CDP / Single stack shooter comrades. I shoot mainly round nose, and put a little over 5K through 6 CMC mags the last season I shot, with no issues.
I haven't used the Tripp mags, and nobody I know uses them, however, I have read good things about them, as well as the Wilson 47's.
Regardless, once you find a mag that runs, stick with it IMO.

Re: Question about the Chip McCormick Power Mag 8 rd.
Check the spring, it may be in backward. Also, with some snap caps or dummy rounds hand function the gun and watch what the round that doesn't feed does. Is it "diving" or "jumping?" Diving is usually a spring/follower problem jumping a feed lip problem. A new spring may be all it needs.
I have been using CMC mags for years and have never had any problems. Can't say the same about the Wilson's I own. Try replacing the spring and follower with some from Tripp that is a gunsmith in a bag. Tripp mags are a little pricey but, unless you get your Wilson or CMC mags at a discount the price of the Tripps isn't all that bad.

The only 1911 mag I ever had a problem with was a Wilson. To be fair they did resolve the issue with a new spring but apparently it was shipped with a defective spring. My McCormicks, Cobras, and the Colt mags have all been perfect.
