Our latest Darwin Award candidate

Full story here. I've developed a safer method of clearing my guns. "rlol"

"A man wondering whether there was still a bullet in the chamber of a pistol after removing the magazine put the gun to his head early Sunday and pulled the trigger, accidentally fatally shooting himself, a Volusia County sheriff’s spokesman said."

I was wondering the same thing. You stick a gun to your head and pull the trigger. Doesn't sound accidental to me.

In the current case, failure of each of the three cardinal rules -- muzzle pointed in an unsafe direction, action loaded when shooting wasn't (presumably) the intent, and finger on the trigger -- produced a predictable result. I recall one of my instructors saying something like this. With firearms, whenever the answer to the "What'll happen if" question is "I don't know", it probably isn't a good idea to do it. Range example: Where will the bullet strike (what'll happen if) I shoot over the berm? It probably isn't a good idea to shoot over the berm since you don't know what the projectile will ultimately strike. I view this as an addendum to the cardinal safety rules -- a final check if you will. My fourth rule / guidleline might have been helpful if it was ingrained in the minds of the actor(s), but then again they clearly weren't overly concerned about safety.

It's not. It's pure stupidity, wrapped in false machismo, which resulted in the guy killing himself.

You can't fix stupid. He had no business even picking up a gun, not knowing the dangers.

Assuming he didn't intend to off himself and the story is being altered by those that were present.

I always say the only time my guns are unloaded is when they are field stripped. There are tons of people that have been shot with "unloaded" guns. Just another story of you can't outsafe stupid.
