Hot shell casing went into his shirt, so all the gun rules go away when that happens. Sarcasm off.

He shot his son in the neck, who was standing behind him with younger daughter and the older son.

Unbelievably sad. I hope the family gets through this without any further loss.

You have to tell yourself ahead of time that the gun goes down on the table before anything else. I am not sure any additional rules or changes would help much.

Put the gun down and then deal with whatever you need to address. Drop the gun if you have to.

I know this father is suffering the loss of his son and as a father myself, I feel really and truly sorrowful for him. So I will not comment further.

We are all fallible, which is why ingraining safety habits is so important. Properly ingrained safety habits regarding finger and muzzle discipline would have gone a long way toward preventing this tragedy. To ensure everyone involved is thinking safety first and foremost, all live fire exercises we conduct begin with a safety briefing. I pray for God's peace and comfort to the family.
