For those that forgot - Merle Haggard, who while drunk, broke into a cafe that was supposedly open at the time. Haggard was drunk and he thought the business was closed at the time. He spent nearly three years in San Quentin Prison and was paroled in 1960. He was pardoned by California Governor Ronald Reagan in 1972. Reagan expunged Haggard's criminal record, giving him a full pardon.

I'll bet those working in the cafe watched in confusion as Merle began breaking into the back door when they knew the business was already open, so Haggard and the other two drunks with him could have walked into the front door. At the time, they probably didn't know he was trying to break in to burglarize the place.

Stupid tax was probably costly to Haggard at the time.
