TX: Houston Police Officer has ND shooting self at academy range

Occurred while drawing his gun from his holster.

Training with other detectives in the major offenders group.

Conscious and in stable condition.

They called it an unintentional discharge. Art is blaming the holster as defective.

From the article.
"The gunshot entered in this thigh and came out on his lower leg near his ankle. It appears to be a through and through wound. we’re very happy and relieved to say he is alert, conscious and he is doing well,” Acevedo said.

He blamed the holster, saying it has a design flaw that he believes contributed to the accidental shooting.

“The holster he was using is a holster that has a release right here on the side of the holster and as he came up his finger inadvertently ended up engaging at the trigger into the trigger guard and he shot himself in the thigh,” Acevedo said.

Acevedo said the department is conducting an investigation into the incident. He said he expects the department to prohibit the use of that particular holster by other officers because it’s not safe.
Focus on this part of the quote.
as he came up his finger inadvertently ended up engaging at the trigger
So Acevedo said the officer engaged the trigger, but the holster is to blame. IMHO that is a political statement. Blame everyone who isn't on our team. Hmmmm... how long before the lawsuit?

:grumble :eek6  :???: :banghead:

Didn’t read the article, but taking a guess here as a Blackhawk Serpa Holster.

Blackhawk Serpas are everywhere. I refused to allow one on my range for training for this very reason. It is the only holster I every negatively spoke by name in class. I know one acquaintance that carries in one and he knows what I think about it. He thinks it is the cats meow.

Now on Houston PD. I thought all firearms AND gear were furnished.

If it was a SERPA, I would not be surprised.

They are banned on our range and for duty use in our company.

I'm betting that it was a striker-fired weapon such as a Glock, Probably paired with a Blackhawk Serpa. It's called Glock leg though, not Serpa Leg.

Interesting, in my LTC class, the instructor covered ND with finger release holsters, index finger specifically. The class began with a video of a ND. good class..

He probably knew we'd have some people here do that for him. Looks like he was right. :evil2:

Glock Leg has happened with other holsters too. But in the case of the Serpa, it happens with 1911s too (warning.....F-Bomb and SoB after he shoots himself):
https://youtu.be/zYvAxLX6OzE

He shows two holsters.... the Safariland "thumb drive" holster that he’d been using earlier in the day with a Glock, and the Serpa he was using with his 1911 when he shot himself.

He blames himself, not the holster. But I’d contend that some equipment creates the environment for higher risk than others. I like the Safariland thumb release system. You couldn’t pay me to use a Serpa, regardless of what gun I was using.
