Upgraded to RCBS Rock Chucker

Postby Lonest4r » Sun Dec 30, 2012 7:20 pm

I just upgraded my press from a C-frame Lee to a Rock Chucker Supreme to handle my .270 reloading. Are there any accessories for the press that are absolute must haves? I hand prime currently with my lee tool, is the RCBS on-press priming system much better/easier?

On my rock chucker I use a Hornady Lock-n-Load conversion bushing so I can set my dies and forget about them. Plus it lets me stock the same bushing for my Rock Chucker and my Hornady L-N-L AP. Other upgrades/accessories I would suggest is a good beam balance scale (RCBS 10-10 or 5-0-5) and a powder tricker along with a quality hand priming tool.

Since you will be reloading 270win rifle. 1. calipers to measure case length and 2. a case trimmer. I have never found a single stage press that I like priming on. A hand primer is better in my experience.

I have a few different methods to prime brass, but like my RCBS Bench Mount Priming system best.

I have all the other reloading basics, I was just wondering if there was any rockchucker swag that is a must have for the press. I already discovered that the piggyback is not a recommended option when I decide to upgrade to progressive. I am going to go with Dillon for that.

No swag that I can think of for press. The best accessory I have for my RCBS Press is a Dillon 550. Still use single for bullet pulling and very low volume stuff but sadly it now seems lonely and green with envy.

Interesting about that. Does it use the same primer pick up tubes as the Hornady LnL system? Seems identical.

Personally, I use the RCBS hand priming tool. Does EXACTLY that I want it to.

Not sure about the Primer tube interchangeability since I haven't uses The Hornady Unit. I still like my lee hand primer that I have had for 30 + years but for production it makes more sense to use the auto prime in the 550. I am thinking about getting a second Dillon progressive so I can have one set up for large primer & 1 for small primer. Primer size change overs are the slowest modification that I do to my 550 and I don't like doing it. I may be talked into a 650 if someone can make a good enough case that overcomes the familiarity of two identical 550s Pure speed & auto indexing are not enough.
