Melting Pots

Postby RX8er » Mon Dec 31, 2012 11:13 am

Hi all, what do you recommend for a melting pot?

What am I missing if I I don't chose one with a pour spout and use ladle casting? Is there an advantage in having the ability to pour direct from the pot?

A pot with a spout is faster, some old time casters say a ladle makes better bullets. I've done them both ways and I use a pot with a spout. If you are going to use a ladle use the Lyman ladle with a spout on the side.

Thank you MoJo! That is what I was figuring. I have not decided if I want to mold or buy them in bulk to start off with. I'd love to dive head first in and do my own molding...

You could buy in bulk first - it might help in first getting used to loading lead bullets, how they're sized, various hardnesses, etc. Once you have that experience, you could try casting your own, if you still wanted to.

I'd get a bottom-pour pot with spout, personally - something like the Lee 20lb pot. I hate ladle-casting, but would if I had no alternative.
