looking for reload data - 45 acp

#1

Post by Reserve161 »

Well, I have been scrambling to find components and powder where and when
I can.

I bought some 200grain FPJ (Flat Point Jacketed) bullets that are .4515 in diameter.
(Sierra Tournament Master, Match. Bullet # 8825)

The closest load data I have is Lyman load data for a 200 gr Jacketed HP
and it calls for 4.0 to 6.5 grains of Unique. (And I got lucky and scored some
unique last week at Bass Pro, Grapevine)

I don't want to load max - these are just plinking rounds for me...

I do have a Sierra loading manual coming and I'm hoping to find a recipe in
there for what powders I have (Unique or Red Dot).

Should I load 5 grains of Unique? Wait and find different load data?

Thanks in advance!

I really like Unique although it is a bit crunchy in my RCBS uniflow. Have a look at the AlliantPowder site loading guide.

Always, always, always, start at the minimum and work your way up. The online Alliant Guide says for a 200 gr jacketed round, do not exceed 7.3 and suggests you start at the max less 10%.
Also, the excerpt from the Sierra guide that is in "The Complete Reloading Manual for 45 ACP" says for #8825 200 gr FPJ start at 5.2 Unique and do not exceed 7.4 grains. Use an OAL of 1.155.

I suspect that means you will be fine at 5.0 :) I would load up a few at 5 and some at 5.2 and see how they shoot.

For comparison, there's a pet load we love for 230 gr FMJs that uses 6.2 of Unique, Winchester standard large pistol primer & OEM overall length. Very accurate & works without a hitch in any .45 and will run a Thompson subgun with no issues either. If and when you manage to dig up any 230s, give that a whirl - I think you would be as happy with it.

5-5.5 grains of Unique with a 200 gr bullet is a good shooting mid range .45 load. Alliant's website says 7.3 grains of Unique with a 200 gr bullet max load.
