Should I wait to send my paper work?

I took and passed my CHL course in June, then I see that in Sept we will gain an extra year on our renewal and because I'm a Vet I will get it for 1/2 price. Should or can I wait?
I posted this on TPXDSA forum and all said to wait, but now I found this site and you all seem to be the experts on Texas CHL's so I ask your advice.

Paperwork is suppose to be good for two years. I already had my say in the other forum. Let's see what happens here.

I wouldn't wait. If you mail it now the envelope may not even get opened until Sept anyway.

I think that only the renewal is 5 yrs, and renewal paper work is only good for 6 mo. or until 1 yr. after the expiration date, first time certification is good for two yrs, and only active duty personnel will be half the price ( as well as Seniors ) they will go by the date they receive payment to comply with the new laws.

If the cost is and issue, as it was for me and many other, then wait.

If the extra year is an issue then wait.

If neither are a major concern then there is no reason to wait.

On the other hand, it is only another month. Then the money that you save can be used towards more training, a carry gun (if you don't have one), or ammo.

I'm a Vet too...

But what I got out of that bill that would have cut in half our fee to renew or get a new licence for that matter, didn't change for Veterans...

It only cut in half the fee for active duty personel...

It did at one point cover ALL Veterans...But they amended it and removed the retired or non-active duty Veterans exemption or status...And left in the clause to only apply to "active duty personel"

I stand to be corrected, but thats what I had heard, and that bill passed...And goes into effect September 1, 2005...

If I am wrong Woo Hoo! I can do $35 (if thats the right fee now for renewals)...

Somebody slap me if I'm wrong, K?

One thing to think about...

Who would be the largest segment of CHL holders in this State???

Why would the State cut their throats on the largest segment of the CHL community by allowing them to pay half of what they used to take in...

Its not some much that we didn't get the fee reduced...

Its the fact that the bill got introduced to cut a break to all Veterans, then they realized it would reduce a revenue source, then Opps!!! Lets don;t do that...

But lets keep the active duty exemption (which is ok by me) but you realize the rub I had with the whole thing...

But this is just what I understood to be going on with that bill...

Steve's right; HB322 was amended to delete the reduction in fees for veterans; but it left in "veterans" in the section dealing with lowering of the CHL age to 18 for military personnel.

Here is the relevant language:

(g) Notwithstanding Subsection (a)(2), a person who is at
least 18 years of age but not yet 21 years of age is eligible for a
license to carry a concealed handgun if the person:
(1) is a member or veteran of the United States armed
forces, including a member or veteran of the reserves or national
guard;


SECTION 4. Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, is
amended by adding Section 411.1951 to read as follows:
Sec. 411.1951. REDUCTION OF FEES FOR MEMBERS OF UNITED
STATES ARMED FORCES. Notwithstanding any other provision of this
subchapter, the department shall reduce by 50 percent any fee
required for the issuance of an original, duplicate, modified, or
renewed license under this subchapter if the applicant for the
license is a member of the United States armed forces, including a
member of the reserves, national guard, or state guard.
SECTION 5. This Act takes effect September 1, 2005.

You got that right!!! I am right, right on...

So if I join up in the "Texas State Guard" I can get a 50% reduction in my next renewal...

I've been considering affiliating with that organization for a while...A few people have been bugging me about going ahead and doing that...

The problem is I'm a rust-picker squiddly guy...I don't know much about that Army stuff...And I'm too old to go playing boot camp again...As much as some of you would love to see me ace that program...
