He not only bought it for the Uncle, but the Uncel was out of state, so transferring it to him without going through an FFL was illegal.

If I recall correctly, he went through an FFL in his state to take possession of his purchase and then went through an FFL in the other state to transfer to his uncle. The problem was he did buy the gun, at a LE discount he qualified for, with the intent of passing those savings to the relative.
