The article is entitled "The First Madam Sheriffs" and was in the June 2013 edition.

The 1st Texas madam sheriff was also the first female sheriff in the entire USA.

Why is the word "Madam" in their title?

I seem to recall this word used in another rather dubious manner...

It can be used in that manner, but it's not limited to brothel managers. The salutation "Dear Sir/Madam" is still in common use.

As in Madam Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, or Madam President when she ends up winning the election in 2016 if we don't get our act together. :banghead:

I'm familiar with the use of "Madam" for various offices, but I guess I thought it unnecessary title elaboration for Sheriff.

Perhaps, I'm too evolved being the feminist I am...
