I couldn't find any threads on this so ...
In most instances, a single shooter. But when there are two, unbeknownst to you, it is deadly. Sad tale ...

Very sad.
One thing we always did as police officers was to evaluate the actions of everyone involved in such use of force situations. By learning we can actually honor those who give their lives.
We discuss these types of incidents in my classes. I tell my students never to go to the fight. Use your handgun to protect yourself as you escape, if necessary. It is not uncommon for criminals to have armed "lookouts". The recent type of active shooter we see is typically alone, but not all shooting situations involve that type of gunman.
Also, there are psychological and physiological responses that can be a huge liability for even the well trained. Tunnel vision is one such response. You will lose the ability to take in a comprehensive picture of the scene.
The civilian was brave and acted honorably. However.........
