There is a joke that when asked if you are Jewish, a Gentile will answer "no" and a Jew will answer "why do you ask?"* I have to say that that is my first reaction when asked by someone I'm not very familiar with. Historical biases aside, to me it seems like an odd question from a stranger.

*Similar to the threads about doctors asking if you have guns. Someone who doesn't will answer "no", someone who does will answer "none of your business".

Two worst lead in's ever....

"I'd like to talk to you about the (name religious cult) I am in."

"I'd like to talk to you about multi-level marketing."

"talk to" = "talk at".... never 'talk with'

But those can both be very effective lines if you happen to find yourself sitting next to a talkative person on a long flight where you just want to get some sleep. That, or mention your job as an IRS auditor.

My personal favorite is to say I'm a Life Insurance salesperson.
