When i was young we used to convert our fising gear into snake gear. We would catch mostly cottonmouths and other water snakes. Some of our bigger catches were past 7 feet. Our first catch was under a wood slat bridge. I tied a fishing line onto a stick with a hook tied to the other end of the line. I lowered the line through the space bettween the wood planks on the bridge and hooked a snake that was laying underwater. I quickly reeled the snake up by rotating the stick letting the line wrap around it. After i pulled the snake from sthe water i tied off the line to the stick and let it to rest on the bridge suspending it jsut above the water, the snake stayed coiled even hooked in the air! With one trusty rock from my brother with his sling shot i killed it, cut off and burried its head.
We took our prize home and started to figure out how to clean and eat this beast. I also had plans to make bracelets out of the skin! Well i decided that i would use heavy duty scissors and cut up along where the belly met the tough scales. All went well untill i cut something that exploded guts into my face and it looked just like that picture!
Much to my horror I knew then that i had killed a pregnant female cottonmouth. We didnt know that the snake was spawning and felt horrible! We decided we needed to learn alot more about snakes so off to the library we went!

Actually for Black Bass (one very good lure is Rattlesnake and Baby Rattlesnake, by Grande Bass lure company, here in Texas if you don't use live bait; I use these "wacky rigged" they are the best I ever used in "Plastic worms" http://www.grandebass.com/gb93t/store/c ... roduct=213
A record sized Bass was caught on this one on "shaky heads", http://www.grandebass.com/gb93t/store/c ... roduct=183

I kayak fish and know a fellow kayak fisherman, Shane, using live bait, but I don't.
Here's Shane with 14 photos (click Next above the photo)

(Don't try this at home, Shane is a little bit crazy IMHO, and in the opinion of several other Kayakers who know him better than I do)

And the momma? //// Tastes like chicken my dad told me, though I've not yet had opportunity to eat one.

I have no affiliation with anyone mentioned above, and no affinity to rattlesnakes, except plastic ones.

The mention of using the little ones for bait, reminded me of the story of the "biting worms".

We were driving on a dirt road in Big Bend National Park and a rattler was just laying
in the middle of the road, sunning itself.

I was going to run over it to kill it because IMHO, any dead rattler is a good rattler.
It would have saved some other person from being bitten, possibly losing their life.

Well, the spousal unit said "don't bother him - he's out here where he belongs".

By the time the negotiations with her went on for a while, he slithered off the road
where I could not attack him with our Taurus (the Ford type, not the gun type!)
