For those that don't know, be careful and ask instead of just plowing thru the take down of a 1911.

In this case, it is a "How NOT to" tip.

This guy failed to return the hammer to the un-cocked position after removing the slide. He used a punch with great difficulty to get the MSH pin out. Now,........where did that pin go?

Warning: some blood and while a serious injury, it's a bit funny too.

That guy is an idiot. Did he even try to read instructions on how to detail strip a 1911 before starting? He should sell the 1911 on the grounds that he's not smart enough to own one.

i run 1911s, and have since childhood... i've always been dumbfounded by folks' need to 'detail strip' a 1911. my old 'farm .45' used to get field stripped and blasted with brake cleaner every May when i got back on grandad's farm... whether it needed it or not... :)

yeah, i can do it, have done it... will do it again. but i don't thing my new Remmy will need the full strip for a long time. it just isn't that necessary. granted, i don't shoot 500 rounds a week, and i clean them if i shoot them, and store them right.

i think some dudes are a little OCD when it comes to firearms. i suffer as well, it's just pointed in a different direction.

and let me sound like less of a jerk by saying i have done stupid things with a hammer in my hand, like this chap... and i have the scars to prove some of them.

let's go easy on him. he's a glock guy, after all. :)

That blunt retaining pin sure had to hurt going in...and he sure had to "whack a mole" it for it to go that deep.

A little trick I learned to safely remove the mainspring housing pin is to use an automatic center punch. Place the gun on it's side with the cupped side of the retaining pin up, take an automatic center punch and press the pin out. The force of the spring will drive the pin about halfway out of the frame. You then can easily pull the pin from the gun and control where it and the MSH go. I use an El Cheapo Harbor Freight Tools punch, cost is less than five bucks. No, it does not mar the pin.
