Strange for us to think of today, but dying in 1862 at 47 actually put Samuel Colt beyond the average life expectancy in the U.S. at that time. In 1860 the overall life expectancy--male and female combined--was 39.41 years. In 1865, partly due to the Civil War, it dropped to 35.1 years. In 1870 it was back up to 39.4 years and stayed stable through 1880, when it started to rise pretty steadily other than another dip in 1920. 'Course, the average life expectancy was affected big time by infant mortality rates. But still, if making it to 50 would be "ripe old age," it'd change your perspective.

Evidently, Colt was one of the wealthiest men in America when he died. Always good to see a firearm visionary make good.
