1832 - San Antonio became the first Texas town to present a list of grievances to the legislature of Coahuila and Texas. The document known as the Bexar Remonstrance was signed by José Ángel Navarro, alcalde of San Antonio. It sought repeal of that part of the Law of April 6, 1830, banning immigration from the United States. It also sought the separation of Texas from Coahuila.

1836 - The First Congress of the Texas Republic established the southern and western boundaries to be the Rio Grande from mouth to source, then north to the 42nd parallel.

1836 - The Rebublic of Texas Congress claimed jurisdiction over the Santa Fe area. In 1841 President Mirabeau B. Lamar on his own initiative proposed an expedition to Santa Fe to establish a trade route as well as to offer the New Mexicans the opportunity of participating in the Texas government. This was the famed Texan Santa Fe expedition.

1842 - President Sam Houston ordered Alexander Somervell to organize the militia and volunteers and invade Mexico. Somervell ordered the army on December 19 to return to Gonzales and disband after the Texas army had captured Laredo and Guerrero, Tamaulipas. Pierson, with four other captains and most of the army ignored the order and organized the Mier expedition.

1859 - Mirabeau B. Lamar dies. He served as Vice-President and President of the Republic and is called the Father of Texas Education.

1881 - Capt. Neville, accompanied by four of his Texas Rangers, and three surveyors, set out from Presidio del Norte to navigate an unexplored section of the Big Bend. They weren't the first team to try this, but other expeditions were stopped by unexpected obstructions, like boulders suddenly rising up from the waters. And something else stopped further exploration -- fear. Fear was thought to be somewhat of a deterrent for previous explorers.

1890 - The rival Lubbock County towns of Lubbock and Monterey agreed to consolidate. A dispute developed when railroad right of way was proposed to the 2 towns and disagreement erupted. Monterey agreed to consolidate with Lubbock, and all of the buildings in Monterey were moved to Lubbock, including all home and business's. The original site of Monterey was north of the present campus of Texas Tech University.

1926 - NFL Hall of Famer and former record-holding University of Texas quarterback Robert(Bobby) Layne was born in Santa Anna, Texas. He played with the Detroit Lions in three NFL championships.

1959 - Walter Williams died in Houston, TX, at the age of 117. He was said to be the last surviving veteran of the U.S. Civil War.

1959 - The first Bluebonnet Bowl was played on this date in 1959 at Rice Stadium. On this first game,
Clemson beat TCU 23 to 7.
