Lewisville: $6M robbery. GG had no gun, bad video system.

On 12/29/09, 2 armed men robbed an inconspicuous looking
Lewisville, TX (Denton County, north of Dallas) jewelry store
of $6 million.
There is no mention of the store owner having a weapon.
He had a security camera system, but it was old school with a tape
in the VCR, which the bad guys took with them.
Can you imagine owning a business with $6,000,000 onsite, but not having a
gun, or a video surveilance system which streams the video to an
Internet site so the bad guys can't get it?
This place is right around the corner from my residence.

surprise. you are right. to have that kind of value onsite with no up to date security! That's retarded. off site dvr camera systems are not that expensive.
Nor is a gun!

Harold (the owner)does carry a gun.It was an employee that the robbers took advantage of.
We have done business there for about 20 years. What I have a hard time believing is that there was 6 million in that store.

Nobody gets robbed of little and/or inexpensive things. That wouldn't be newsworthy.J Wilson wrote:Harold (the owner)does carry a gun.It was an employee that the robbers took advantage of.

Sounds like they picked their target carefully (which hints at inside knowledge), or else they were extremely lucky.
If I had the best wall-to-wall hidden camera system in the world, streaming to an off-site server, I would also keep an old-school tape system. It would be like a throw-down wallet: satisfy the BGs they had gotten away with something.

Throw-down security tape - what an awesome idea!
I recall a post from way back where a member kept a nonfunctioning shotgun in his home and in the open. That way if he came home and saw that shotgun missing he'd know someone broke in, and might still be there.
Just speculating on the robbery: 6M, no security. I wonder how much the insurance payout will be?
Just saying...

J Wilson:
That's great that the owner had a gun.
It seems though that his employee should also have been packing.
When I see such a high dollar value stolen from a rather modest looking
store, it makes me wonder if this is some kind of insurance scam.
Not to demean the owner, who you know, but this kind of thing does
happen sometimes.

I agree. This sounds like an inside job. Owner gone, 6 million taken, videotape missing. Probably won't take long for the cops to make an arrest on this one.chabouk wrote:Sounds like they picked their target carefully (which hints at inside knowledge), or else they were extremely lucky.

This being the jewelry business, $6 million retail probably means it will take about half a million to replace the inventory.
