Ode to a Sheepdog.....

#1

Post by williamkevin »

Today, we lost a good friend. I returned home from work this afternoon to discover that our 13 year old Australian Sheppard had passed on. It was her time, as she had lived a long and happy life. We got her as a pup, and she grew up as a part of our family. A loving and constant companion to all of us, she earned her keep in true working dog fashion, whether by making sure she could always keep an eye on her people and return any stray back to the "flock", or by conducting all of those late night perimeter patrols around the back yard to ensure our property remained a "squirrel free zone".

Her passing, just like her life was on her own terms....for this very afternoon we had an appointment at the vet to have her put to sleep.

Rest easy old girl.....and thanks.

Sorry for your loss. Losing a dog is like losing a child I've cried my eyes out too many times after losing a faithful companion.

I'm so sorry for your loss, it's tough. I'm kind of in the same boat, my old dog 16 years old has been the best dog, she is a stray that came up about 15 years ago. I really need to have her put down but I keep holding out.

Nothing like starting the day with a good cry. Having buried both a son and many pets, I know your pain.

I feel your pain. I've lost a few pets and in the last 18mo I've lost both my Dad and his older brother. The loss and pain runs just as deep as the other.
I am sorry for your loss.

We lost our Jenny back in late March. In early April, we adopted Trapper. He doesn't replace Jenny. He is his own dog, and has his very own place in our hearts. Jenny's place is still empty, but time is smoothing off the sharp parts.

Sorry about your loss.

Sorry about the loss of your furry family member. She will always hold a special place in your heart and the memories of the great times she gave you will be your solace. May she romp and play with the rest of our long lost friends at the park in doggie heaven.

It's been over 5 years since I had to put down Nikki, my German Shepherd/Chow mix. I raised her ever since she was 3 days old (her momma had to have emergency surgery and was no longer able to feed her pups, and the owner was too poor to feed the babies, so we took in a few and kept Nikki). She was the most wonderful, loyal companion I ever had, in spite of her occasional habit of knocking over the trash can and inspecting all the contents therein. After 14 years and several ailments, including a large, cancerous mass found in her stomach, I made the decision to have her put down. To this day, it's been the toughest decision I ever made, in spite of the absolute necessity of it. I have two wonderful Labradors now and they're a hoot, but it's posts like William's that make me think of Nikki, and I still get teary eyed when I do. I feel his grief, far more than any non-dog owner ever can.
