An Ebola outbreak has occurred in Africa. 64 are dead. It has a kill ratio so far of around 66 percent.

If you hear that hospital workers are dieing or that cases are being reported in major cities in Africa, it will not take long for it to reach Europe. Once there it could reach the US quickly.

Quarantining yourself until it burns out is your only defense.

Hopefully this strain is passed by contact not by the air and that it has a short period of incubation. Otherwise we will hear more. A short period causes it to burn out quickly without infecting more people.

Dr. Kent Sepkowtiz for the Daily Beast said it is unlikely the virus will spread to the United States.

“The disease simply sickens and kills too quickly, plus anyone in the U.S. with an odd febrile illness and rapid progression to prostration is placed into gown and glove isolation at just about every hospital in the country,” Sepkowtiz wrote.

He noted that it wouldn’t likely cause a pandemic elsewhere either because it is actually “an easily preventable disease.” Countries with underfunded health care systems are more likely to see outbreaks.

Update: Man from Canada does not have Ebola. Just an ordinary disease that could make you really sick that you get in Africa.

That was true even back in 1918 with the great flu epidemic that killed so many people. The wealthier the country the fewer people that died...not so many here compared to undeveloped parts of the world. And within a given wealthy country, the poorer, and hence, usually more densely packed, the higher the mortality rate. Some troop ships heading to Europe arrived with 95% on board dead.

I was doing some reading on the 1918 flu a while back. A few people theorized that while the flu was indeed serious what made it worse was that the over treated with aspirin and basically poisoned people.

For the flu.....fluids, soup, rest and time are your best friends.


Ebola is terrifying. I think if I lived there I would stay in my house till the epidemic had passed over. I have read journals of families that did precisely that 100+ years ago when things like yellow fever and cholera went through a town. Most of the time it worked.
