Guns do not plug into a socket, so are not affected by a Coronal Mass Ejection.

I'm not sure how I would handle a year or so power outage.

Obviously an effect of global warming. (Maybe solar-system warming?). :smilelol5:

No, he means what he says. An EMP, or more correctly a HEMP (High-Energy Magnetic Pulse) is one of the effects of a nuclear blast. A CME hitting the earth would also cause an EMP.

In simple terms, what happens is that either event causes a strong, fast moving magnetic field which will induce high voltage in any wire it passes through. That voltage will fry electronic components everywhere.

Before I retired from the USAF, I lead the team that installed all communications for the nation's early warning computer system when they moved it into a HEMP shielded room. All comm in and out of that room goes over fiber optics. No wire allowed.

One viable tactic for using nukes is a high altitude burst. There is very little physical damage or fallout from such a blast, but the HEMP will wreak havoc on anything electrical.
