Dropcam - but for outdoors?

#1

Post by Teamless »

I have a couple Dropcam's in my house, but would like something, just about as easy as the Dropcam's for outdoor use.

I am not sure how or where I would mount them yet, but I would like to get something with view looking at our driveway and walk way and maybe even our back yard.

I mention "about as easy as Dropcam's" as setting up the camera's, seeing video's, especially how it shows when there was motion (on the timeline), is quite easy, and honestly, I am not very "new age Tech Savvy" so if it very difficult, need to have own server, etc, etc, it wont work.

Is there anything as good, but for outdoor use?

Thanks!

Are you satisfied with the Dropcam? How many do use and I am assuming you can set up more? Which ones are you using?

This appears to be something that might work for us.

Thanks for your help.

I had a Dropcam for a few hours. It got returned because it would not connect via wifi in a location where everything else would.

A friend had one, told me about it, and said it was "just as easy as touted"

I bought the HD version (they have SD and HD, $50 more for the HD) - well worth it for HD
Gets a wider field of view, night vision, and full HD.

After the first one, I got a 2nd about a week later. Again, well worth it.

The only bad part, is you need to have an account to save the video
$99/year for 1 camera, and it saves 7 days of video
$299 (I think) for 1 camera, and it saves 30 days of video

if you have a 2nd (or more) camera's, each additional camera requires additional cost for saving the 7 (or 30) days of video, but its at a reduced rate.
For 7 days, for the 2nd camera, its an additional $49/year.

You can use a smart phone app to see your camera's feed at any time, and you can set up "fields" so it notifies you if there is something in those fields so it notifies you to check your activity.
You can save video clips as well, which is what I wanted it for, if something happened, I would be able to use that video evidence.

If you ever wanted a camera for security, this is the one!

The price is good, but when you add the holsters, the price is GREAT!

I was given the unequivocal no response when I asked the wife if I could get it. As I'm trying to talk her into letting me get an AK, I am treading lightly :)
