Where can you live in the US that is hostile to military service? PR maybe?
That's not so much of an issue now, but between wars when the public's memory has grown hazy about what the military is for...things can get a little uglier around military bases than the usual civilian - military tensions.

You get hoary tales like, "Dogs and Sailors not allowed on the grass" and wearing a uniform off base was something you thought twice about.
That sign was still posted on the lawn, where you had to go to get a marriage license in Norfolk, Va., in 1972.

On the CHL the text is in red above your CHL #.

I'm proud to be a veteran. This wasn't an option the last time I renewed my DL. Adding it was not a problem. Down to DPS with a copy of the DD214 & $11, and it was done. Having that veteran designation on the DL also gets me 10% discount at The Home Depot ( which I appreciate ).

Heck, the Ace Hardware (big store) in the small community I live in does not require anything. You tell them you are a veteran and bam, 10% off. But they were always a good neighbor to the community.
