When will Cabela's have Mosins on Sale for $99 again?

Post by drjoker »

When will Cabela's have Mosin Nagants on sale for $99 again? A friend of mine sold his AR and XD40 due to economic hard times but he still wanted a gun for HD. He asked what kinda gun can he get for $99. I said, the Mosin Nagant. "I'll give you some ammo if you'll let me shoot your gun," I offered (my wife hates guns so I can't have one at home). He agreed.

Does anyone know when Cabela's next Mosin sale is?

Thanks,
:tiphat:

I dunno, but sign me up... are these online or in-store sales? If in-store, $99 + tax is a better deal than $79 online plus shipping and transfer (and waiting!!) :thumbs2:

Big 5 runs them at that price or lower fairly often.

Big 5 is a chain of sporting goods stores kind of like Academy.

I'm not sure how widespread the chain is, but there are stores in Lubbock and Wichita Falls.

I got a surprise birthday-present VZ-24 Mauser from there a couple of years ago - $69!

I'm not sure how useful a Mosin Nagant would be for HD.

Other options in the $99 price range might be a M 1895 Nagant revolver (expensive for ammo, though) or a used, cheap, pistol, like a 9mm High Point, or similar.

You would be better off spending twice that on a pump shot gun. New or used.

The trouble with that is that by the time you run some HD ammo through it to see if it cycles okay, it'll be broken already... "rlol"

Mosin Nagant 1891/30 for 69.95. Shipping (for me) came out to $13. $25 transfer fee = $108

They have higher grade rifles for more $$$, and if you have a C&R FFL it can be shipped straight to your door.

At $83 with my C&R, it might be worth getting one to play with. Except... I'd have to build another gun rack, as every current slot is either occupied or spoken for.

Err... didn't I just say that he sold all of his guns due to financial difficulty? He couldn't even afford the ammo, so I'm gonna buy the ammo for him. I think in the $99 price range, all you have available are;

1. Nagant revolver
2. Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R rifle (Cabela's periodic NRA members' sale)
3. Hi Point pistols
4. Single shot shotgun
5. Ancient Harrington & Richardson beat-up revolver
6. Heritage Arms 22LR revolver (with Academy's annual black friday door buster sale)
7. 22LR Marlin (with Academy's periodic sales)

1. Nobody manufactures hollow point nor soft point ammo for the Nagant revolver. Bad HD choice if you have to use ball ammo.
2. Plenty of manufacturers of soft point ammo. I saw some Silver Bear soft point at the last DFW gun show. Plus, you could buy a tin of 880 rounds of ammo for $200 at Cabela's. If you can locate a $20 off coupon, it's a steal at only $180 for 880 rounds of ammo. Keep in mind that this is full size rifle ammo similar to 308 Win, that's powerful stuff for the el cheapo price you're payin. Plus, the bolt action being cycled will have a loud deterrent effect on criminals in a HD situation, similar to a shotgun's round being chambered. Clack-clack! For those of you worried about overpenetration, just shoot 'em in the shorts. The downward trajectory will ensure that the shots get soaked up into the ground, not in your neighbor's house.
3. Hi point pistols are made of pot metal that will MELT at high temperatures and is too weak to use in a durable gun. They are designed to shoot 500 rounds or so and then get tossed into the recycling bin.
4. Single shot shotgun for home defense? What if you have more than one perp?
5. Most H&R revolvers are really beat and of no use if they're in the $99 price range.
6. 22LR is too small a around to use defensively.

As you can see, the Mosin is not ideal for HD, but it is the best that one can get in the $99 price range.

I was at Cabela's at their last sale some months ago. I REALLY wanted one, but I was there with my wife and she HATES guns, so I went home without one :cryin $99 is a steal because Aim surplus will give you a beater for the $79 price. If you want them to pick a slightly better one for you, it will cost you extra $$$. However, if you go to Cabela's early, you can cherry pick the BEST one for $99 for zero extra charge. I spotted one in almost mint condition with a crisp bore, buttery bolt action, and smooth (as smooth as a Mosin could be, that is) trigger. I wish I bought it. Ugh....

So, back to the original question... when is the next Mosin sale at Cabela's? :tiphat:

So you poo poo my HD shotty idea but you recommend $300 in HD MOSIN stuff. :smilelol5: I think a single shot scatter gun can be reloaded as fast as a Mosin can be cycled. I have a single shot 20ga that is WAAAAYYYYYY better at home defense than a Mosin is. As soon as you break the barrel open the spent shell comes flying out and you can pop another shell back in it with the left hand and snap it shut again with the right hand. Pretty quick and a lot more effective than a 24" barrel inside a house blasting a 30cal round at your neighbors. :boxing

Here's a question: If looking for a "cheap" Mosin at Cabela's, is there any particular variation/proof mark that would make a particular rifle more desirable than the next one over in the rack?
