M44 Goodness.

Helped a co-worker move and decided that I would stop in at the Pawn Shop of my old stomping grounds. Real glad I did!

Picked up this gem, all numbers matching izhevshk 1946 and it looks like it has never been shot. Bore and chamber are perfect just a tiny bit of cosmoline left.

I picked up a 440 round spam can. 20 loose rounds of silver tip surplus and 40 rounds of Brown Bear Soft point for $100 bucks tonight here in Austin from a guy.

I wanted some loose rounds to shoot with so I didnt have to open the spam can :)

Mine is a 1932 Izzy hex receiver 91/30.

Be prepared to be bruised if you don't wear a pad. It will punish you.

My first centerfire rifle was a 91/30 converted from a M91 "Dragoon" from around 1935. Since then, I've added an M38, M44, and two M91s - one, an Ishevsk,from 1915 (and bearing property marks from half a dozen different countries), and the other, a Remington I recently found in a pawn shop.

Did yours come with the 2x4 to open the bolt, too?

After WWII the Russians refurbed all the Mosins they could find and put them in storage, for the next war. Many of them had parts replaced out of inventory, and some were re-barreled. The "re-arsenal" process made them ready to issue to troops, and they generally did a good job. The tolerances are not real close on the bolts and receivers, but they can usually be improved with cleaning, light buffing of sharp corners, and grease.

They're addictive.

Have a couple of 91/30s, a 38 carbine and a pair of Finn Model 39s. The Finns are a joy and dead accurate. After firing 5 rounds from the 38 carbine, my then, 18 year old son put it down, rubbed his shoulder and state, "Those Russians must have been pretty tough to shoot this."

Shoot, clean, have fun and revel in the history of shooting these old rifles.
