Yesterday I went to Austin and completed my lower. It was interesting and fun but also a lot of work, due in no small part to zero prior experience. Doug was very patient and very good at explaining everything. My advice to anyone planning to do this is wear your most comfortable shoes and be ready to learn a lot.

Yesterday I went to dcphoto's and completed my lower. It was very interesting and fun but also a lot of work, much more than I ever expected. dcphoto is a very patient teacher and very good at answering my many, many questions.
I agree with LDB415: "My advice to anyone planning to do this is wear your very most comfortable shoes and be ready to learn a lot."

Another survivor checking in. Thanks to dcphoto for his hospitality and patient guidance throughout the process. I echo the earlier comments regarding the time/work as well as the benefit of good shoes.

Anybody looking to save money is better off buying a completed lower, unless your time is worth less than minimum wage. However, if you gain a sense of accomplishment from making things with your hands (and tools!) the experience is priceless. Even considering those interior idiot marks I made by drilling too deep. ;-)

Thanks again dcphoto!
