My Valentine's Day present to me - a Mossy 590

#1

Post by johncanfield »

Been thinking about a home defense shotgun for a few years and was focused on either a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 590. So there I was in the local gun store yesterday and they had a few new and used tactical-type (as in not a bird gun) shotguns. One was a used 870 (nah), and one was a new Mossy 590. Immediate like. Good check weld, I love the safety position on the top rear of the receiver (hated the 870 safety) and it just felt right.

This guy (model 50772) has a nine shot capacity with storage for two more shells in the synthetic stock. I think it's Parkerized, one online store claims that, one store just says matte finish. It has rails so I'm going to pick up a light for it. I had no idea there were so many aftermarket parts available for the 500 series Mossy, just like the Ruger 10/22. Already have my eye on a Magpul stock for it  .

Weather is lousy today but when it gets better, I'll play with it.

That is a fine shotgun. I may get one myself.

Debating on it or the 590A1 which has a better barrel, metal trigger guard, and metal safety switch. Don't know that it is worth the cost difference though.
Please know and follow the rules of firearms safety.

You can buy a metal trigger guard but I think it's part of a drop-in trigger upgrade, the trigger break feels quite crisp so I don't think I'll mess with an aftermarket trigger. I would like to do a sight upgrade though.

The plastic trigger guards are NOT a high breakage item, but yes you can buy a 590A1 trigger group to drop in.

Be sure to check out http://www.mossbergowners.com. There is a wealth of knowledge there and they're almost as friendly as this TexasCHL bunch.

Great choice I am a devoted Mossberg fan. Looks like your dog is jealous that he has been replaced as top security in the house. :smilelol5:

I have one that sleeps by my bed 24/7/365. A fine home defense shotgun.

Congrats on your purchase.

Great choice. I love my old beat-up police 500. The tang safety really is the best IMO. Since it's such a pain to put an extended magazine on mine, I've wanted to get a 590. It's on the wishlist.

I have a 590A1 and really like it. One of the things I like about it is the safety position, which I appreciate as a southpaw.

I upgraded the safety switch to one that is larger and more positive in feel: http://elitetacticaladvantage.com/produ ... afety.html. Here’s what it looks like:

Thank you! Still waiting on the Brown Santa to deliver my Magpul stock and better safety. I'm glad the dog doesn’t need any upgrades ;-)
