The ruling came in a case involving a rule at the University of North Florida banning students from keeping guns in their cars. But the appeals court went beyond that rule (which it rejected) to speak more generally to the right of public colleges and universities to limit gun possession on campus, as local news media indicated they do. Under Florida's Constitution, the appeals court found, only the Legislature can make such restrictions, so most rules imposed by public colleges and universities would be invalid.
This being a InsideHigherEd column (entitled "Gun Bans in Danger" OMG
), there is much angst in the comments. Also I was amused that the article leads off with "A divided court..." as if this were a close call, those gun nuts barely won. Not until the fifth paragraph do you find out the vote was 12-3. The universities and colleges got slammed on this (as well as the district judge who originally dismissed the case).
it appears the court will still stomach banning guns in classrooms and sporting events, but not elsewhere on campus.
