Doesn't sound like he is in favor of concealed carry on campus at all.

Looks like someone is running against him this time around, Matt Beebe.

I think I'll throw some cash their way.

TSRA gives Straus a "A+" rating and endorses him. http://www.tsrapac.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I think he helped Campus Carry get defeated last session. Anyway, many folks
here think J. Straus is in our corner politically. Or maybe he's better than the
unknown (a replacement)? Not sure how he gets a "A+" rating, but I don't run the
TSRA, I'm just a member.

Ratings are nice and all but its clear from the video interview that concealed carry on campus is not important issue to him.

Gun rights period are not an important legislative issue for him, except for the gun rights he opposes.

Looking in the archives it seems we had this discussion two years ago, before the 2011 session, and 95% of the forum members were against him as Speaker. They predicted he would kill campus carry again and that's what happened.

I was one of those who supported Strauss.. I didn't like the anti Jewish rhetoric and name calling I heard from the anti Strauss side and the Social conservative Christianist interference in the Drs office that was being bandied about.

Under Strauss' leadership we lost Campus carry and got the legislators into the gynocologyst office. I was wrong. With strong leadership we would have got campus carry through.. It wasn't that he fought against it, but he sure as Heck didn't fight for it. If we aren't going to get less government in our lives we are better better off with a more conservative government.

I could, and very well may be, wrong but I believe that the emergency session has "rules" for what may be taken up....budget, education, etc. Even I don't then gun laws fall into that.

I was under the impression that Perry could have added campus carry to the special session. Sen. Dan Patrick confirmed this in a radio Q/A on his Houston station. Anyway, I think Perry could have, but didn't for whatever reason.

Bryan Hughes is apparently gong to try to oust Straus as Speaker.

Sounds like a true conservative. Need to find out more about him, though.

I realize that it is shaky ground but I'd take just about anybody right now over Joe Strauss. My preference is for the devil that I don't know over the one that I do know and who seriously damaged the Conservative agenda in the last session. We've managed to replace Vicky Truitt and couple more of Straus' henchmen but the best gift that Texas Conservatives can get this session is a different speaker.

Good news on that front: Hughes coauthored both Driver's and Simpson's campus carry bills last session.

He said in a recent Tribune article he would ensure committees reflect the House as a whole - i.e., fewer Democrats in prominent positions. I'm hoping that if he wins, both Calendars and Public Safety will be nice and conservative, giving campus carry a better chance of passing.

What options do we have for influencing the choice of speaker?

It's up to the state reps to decide - the most we can do is call/write to/visit them and encourage them to vote for Hughes.

Call your Rep. and let him/her know your feelings.
