They were issued to truck and APC drivers who regularly brought ammo resupplies forward to the lines while under fire. They were issued to crew-served weapons crews. THEY were in the thick of things. They were issued as personal defense weapons to artillery crews.

My uncle carried a carbine when he drove a tanker supplying gas to Patton in Europe. He lost several friends when their tankers exploded from enemy fire.However, he did said that it was hard to kill a german stag with the carbine.

Another uncle was on Iwo with your dad, but he had a flame thrower.
