My money would be on the COVID mutating down. There are already other coronaviruses that humans can catch that cause nasty colds. From what I've read over the last couple of years, that's the general trend for those sorts of viruses. The version that doesn't kill gets spread the farthest and fastest because people don't stop their normal activities and eventually the least dangerous version supplants the more dangerous versions.

Oh, sure, because that's just the best news source ever. I'm not saying it's wrong, but I'm not saying it's right, either. And no, I don't trust CNN, FOX, nor any of the others. They are ALL garbage. The only sure thing is that whatever the story that comes out in the news, it's likely wrong in some form or fashion.

I am curious about one thing. How many people died on an average day in the Houston area pre-COVID? In other words, are those 13 per day proven to be excess mortality? And if not all of them are excess mortality, how many are?
Don't forget to subtract the increased murder rate when you make the comparison.
Excellent point, in that it highlights that there are a several variables that have to be taken into account. In that vein, I would add increased suicides from lockdowns as well as business and job losses.

Heard it on the news this morning. They said the RNA vaccine can be changed to add new variants in a few weeks time and out for distribution in 6 weeks. My question is how many darned boosters are we going to have to get? One every six months forever?
I keep saying that eventually, you'll have to be on a constant "drip" of the Fauci juice to "protect" you. Yes, I'm being somewhat facetious but it does seem to me that this thing will be never-ending, and neither will the mandated boosters.

Paladin wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 1:26 pm Study Reveals 'Dramatic' Decline In All Three COVID-19 Vaccines' Efficacy Over Time
Between early March and Septemper, as the Delta variant rapidly became the dominant strain worldwide, the ability of Moderna's two-dose vaccine to prevent infections dropped from 89% - 58%, Pfizer's went from 87% - 45%, and J&J's single-dose vaccine went from 86% to just 13%.

The findings were published Thursday in peer-reviewed Science.

That said, the vaccines' ability to prevent death in older Americans remained somewhat robust over the same period, according to the report.

Among veterans 65 and older who were inoculated with the Moderna vaccine, those who developed a so-called breakthrough infection were 76% less likely to die of COVID-19 compared with unvaccinated veterans of the same age.

Older veterans who got the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and subsequently experienced a breakthrough infection were 70% less likely to die than were their unvaccinated peers.

And when older vets who got a single jab of the J&J vaccine suffered a breakthrough infection, they were 52% less likely to die than their peers who didn’t get any shots. -LA Times

For veterans younger than 65, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines prevented death 84% and 82% respectively, while J&J recipients were 73% less likely to die vs. their unvaccinated peers.
Uh-huh, except that the younger a person is, the less likely they are to die from COVID. That's not ME saying that, mind you, that's according to the data on the Texas COVID tracking dashboard, which I have been following since they put up stats on deaths. If you plot it on a simple graph, it looks like a rapidly ascending ramp from near zero in babies to (likely) asymptotic in very advanced age. I wish I was more math-savvy because that probably means something specific that I just don't have the knowledge to understand.

I'll ask the same question of you that I asked of another individual in another post because it is applicable:

So, we should what, elect a Democrat to "send a message"? Vote for the Libertarian to "send a message", thereby enabling the lock-step Democrat voters to elect their candidate? Or sit this one out to "send a message", thereby enabling the lock-step Democrat voters to elect their candidate? Do you really WANT Texas to be California East? And please, don't tell me that Abbott is as bad as Governor Nuisance (Newsom) of California, either, no matter how this mask order might irritate many folks. Abbott isn't in the same realm of horrible as ol' Gavin, not by a long shot.

If you mean not voting for him next time there is a Republican primary, then that I can understand completely.
I am not in anyway suggesting you are wrong, but it this stuff that makes people like me angry because we are not allowed to vote for who we want and express that opinion. If we do we get your argument constantly and this pressure constantly. “A vote for “whoever” is a vote for the Democrats. “If you don’t got my way it is vote for the liberals.”
:rules:
Sir, I don't make the system. I'm just a wrench-turning mechanic with ZERO connections to politics and lacking any amount of money that might be able to influence things. All I know is that I spent many years in the Air Force stationed in California, and watched that place go downhill rapidly due to the Democrat Party. So, I will always vote for whoever I can to at least slow that slide because that is all I can do.

Self inflicted damage is done. City of Houston budget is blown by the Coronavirus.

First to go all the new police cadets.

Cause with all those people out of work, more police is the last thing Houston needs.

Did you know City of Houston has a paid poet laureate?

I’m not sure he speaks English, if I remember correctly.
So, what I want to know is this: what kind of stunts are Acevedo and the city prosecutors going to pull against the Houstonians who inevitably, but justifiably, are increasingly forced to defend themselves from violent criminals due to those police cutbacks?

Ruark wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2020 5:59 pm I'm beginning to see reports now of people getting $50,000 bills for their coronavirus treatments, particularly if it involved ICUs and/or ventilators. It can go as high as $80K in some cases.

Health care is insane; I don't know where this is going. Take an ordinary ECG of your heart. A Medical Assistant making $8/hr. sticks some electrodes on your chest. They come in boxes of 500, like half a cent each. The MA runs the ECG machine, which cost $399, for a few seconds. It prints out the ECG on some graph paper. The graph paper comes in 100-ft. rolls that cost a few dollars each (in cases of a dozen).

Then comes the bill: ECG - $820.
Then the beauty. The physican grabs the printout, glances at it and says, "yeah, looks OK" and tosses it on the table.
"ECG interpretation: $375"

This is just beyond comprehension.
Medical insurance is one of the reasons that it all costs so much. I have read before that doctors and hospitals do not expect to get the amount that they charge. Each provider decides how much they will cover for any given procedure, often some percentage. So, in essence, the docs and hospitals OVER-charge so they can get something close to what they really want to get for the procedure, whatever it may be. That's a big problem because no one is then sure how much something should really cost. Medical insurance has inflated all the prices for everything medical-related. I'm sure some of the insiders know, but not us "regular folks".
No exactly. Medical payments to providers are decided by a predetermined rate per procedure. So when a provider joins a medical insurance network, they are given a list of how much the insurance will pay for each procedure. It does not matter what the doctor tries to bill, the insurance will only pay the predetermined rate for the procedure. Providers like to bill a ridiculous amount all the while knowing they will only be paid a set amount in order to show that the patient received a discount of the difference. The procedure rates are set according to regional averages.

Medical insurance is only one of the reasons. Fraud, malpractice insurance, and lack of independent doctors (they are mainly all a part of large companies now) are the bigger reasons.
Well, what I do know is that the way things are working right now, that isn't the "free market" at work. The system is broken, but single-payer (government-provided healthcare) will only make it all much, much worse. Maybe what this nation needs is some good, old-fashioned "trust busting". Of course, I won't hold my breath on that one.
